There will be complimentary ice cream from the Trails End Ice Cream truck, hula hooping led by Josie Lamb, APRN, Zumba led by Billing Assistant Gisella Gambino, arthritis-friendly exercises led by Margie Riforgiato, APRN, and a houseplant and seed giveaway. This year's National Health Center Week celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Health Center Program, and highlights the benefits of investments in public health. Since their inception as part of President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty, Community Health Centers have helped people rise out of poverty, saved lives, improved public health, and reduced healthcare costs for everyone.
A delay to the funding renewal for the Health Center Program and cuts to Medicaid at the state and federal levels threaten those gains. Interim Executive Director Julie Everett Hill, RN explained, "When people are unable to afford access to medicine or basic health care, illnesses and chronic conditions that could have been managed by a routine visit to a primary care provider grow into larger issues that require more expensive hospital-based care."
