LOMWRU is a research collaboration unit between the University of Oxford and Mahosot Hospital that supports microbiological diagnosis, trains medical technologists and scientists, and researches a wide range of infectious diseases in Laos. Lao-Oxford-Mahosot Hospital-Wellcome Trust Research Unit (LOMWRU) is a research collaboration between the University of Oxford and Mahosot Hospital supporting microbiological diagnosis in Laos, training medical technologists and scientists, and researching a wide range of infectious diseases. We conduct clinical studies on a wide range of infectious diseases in Vientiane and also at a number of provincial hospitals and field sites in rural Laos and participate in multicentre studies across the MORU Network. Furthermore, LOMWRU builds diagnostic, clinical, and research capacity and, with the World Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN) and the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO), conducts a diversity of research projects on medicine quality epidemiology, diagnostics, forensics, and advocacy. Lastly, LOMWRU supports the infectious disease diagnostic service of Mahosot Hospital and assists other Lao hospitals, including in the investigation of epidemics.

🌍📱 LOMWRU Joins Global Conversation on Innovation for Better Healthcare

Last week, Dr. Vilada Chansamouth, Senior Clinical Researcher at LOMWRU, represented Laos at the Harnessing Innovation in Global Health for Quality Care Exchange (HIGH-Q Exchange) held from 8–11 September at Christ Church College, University of Oxford. 🇬🇧✨

The event brought together global partners to explore innovations, technologies, and challenges in delivering quality clinical care in low-resource settings. Sessions included insightful talks and poster presentations from experts and practitioners across the world to explored how co-designed innovations and evidence-based technologies can lead to practical solutions and real impact.

👏 Dr. Vilada presented exciting work on developing the first smartphone-based antimicrobial prescribing application in Laos, a digital tool designed to support better, safer use of antibiotics in hospital 📲💊

🌟 National Antimicrobial Use Survey Hits Its Final Central Stop!

This week, our team reached the final central hospital “5 April Hospital (Police Hospital)” as part of the annual National Antimicrobial Use (AMU) Survey. 🏥💊

The survey is capturing critical data on how antimicrobials are being used in hospitals across Laos, these insights will help improve antibiotic stewardship and guide safer, more effective use of antimicrobials across the country. 📊🦠

✅ The next phase will take the teams to provincial hospitals in the north and south, aiming for nationwide coverage by the end of October.

🧬💻 Strengthening Bioinformatics Capacity through One Health Collaboration

Over the past two weeks, three representatives from LOMWRU participated in an intensive Bioinformatics Workshop hosted by the Institut Pasteur du Laos, as part of the PIMES program.

The PIMES program focuses on a One Health approach, aiming to improve the detection of new viruses circulating in both humans and animals and helping to prevent and control future outbreaks. 🌍🦠

The workshop focused on building essential bioinformatics skills, covering:
🔹 Fundamentals of biology for bioinformaticians
🔹 Sequence homology and phylogenetics
🔹 Tools for genome analysis
🔹 Practical hands-on training in Python programming, Galaxy platform, and pipeline construction using Snakemake and the command line.

👏 A big thank you to the Institut Pasteur du Laos and the PIMES program for supporting this important capacity-building initiative.

🧬🔬 Advancing Diagnostics with CRISPR at LOMWRU!

This week, LOMWRU was delighted to welcome Claire Chewapreecha, Associate Research Fellow at MORU, along with colleagues from the Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC), for an exciting and hands-on training on their novel CRISPR assay for Burkholderia pseudomallei the bacterium that causes melioidosis which is a common infectious disease found in Southeast Asia particulary Laos.

Using cutting-edge CRISPR technology, this new diagnostic tool offers rapid, sensitive, and highly specific detection of B. pseudomallei🧪✨. Moreover, providing a valuable lecture on CRISPR techniques, followed by practical training for our Molecular team and interested staff.

👏 A huge thank you to Claire, Sukritpong Pakdeerat, and Raiwin Mothong from MORU, as well as Maturada Patchsung and Thanate Srimora from VISTEC, for sharing their expertise and helping strengthen local diagnostic capacity.

🎓✨ Celebrating Future Public Health Leaders!

On Monday, 8th September, the 10 students of Batch 24 from the Lao Tropical and Public Health Institute’s Master’s in Tropical Medicine and International Health successfully defended their thesis projects to an international jury 🙌 The following day, the graduation ceremony was held with Prof. Mayfong Mayxay, Director of the University of Health Sciences, presenting the degrees. 🏅

📊 This year, LOMWRU proudly hosted two outstanding students for their thesis projects:

These projects were supervised by Tamalee Roberts, LOMWRU's research microbiologist, with co-supervision from Dr. Vilada Chansamouth and Dr. Koukeo Phommasone.

📚 This graduation is extra special as Lao TPHI celebrates 25 years of its Master’s programme! Over 400 students have graduated, including several current LOMWRU team members and 9 Lao graduates have gone on to pursue PhDs at our partner institutions: Swiss TPH, Laval University, and VU Amsterdam. 🌍🎓

💡 The Growing Burden of Kidney Disease in Lao PDR

📅 Early September, the Unit for Health Evidence and Policy (UHEP) hosted a stakeholders’ meeting to share progress on the economic evaluation of Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT) in Lao PDR, a project funded by the Thai National Health Foundation and Sapphire Network with technical support from HITAP, MORU, and LOMWRU.

🩺 In Laos, many patients who need haemodialysis have to pay a lot of money for their treatment. Another treatment option, called peritoneal dialysis, could be more affordable and practical in the long term, however this option is not widely used yet and remains limited due to several constraints.

This study aims to provide economic and feasibility evidence for renal replacement therapy (RRT) in patients with End stage kidney disease (ESKD) to support the policy-making process, making treatment more accessible and sustainable for patients in need.

🗣️ The meeting concluded with a lively and constructive discussion on possible next steps for improving access to RRT in Laos. LOMWRU and partners remain committed to supporting evidence-based policymaking and advancing equitable health solutions for the Lao population.

📚✨ On Friday, 5th September, LOMWRU proudly joined the University of Health Sciences in celebrating National History Day and the 10th Government Committee of Health through a conference on medical and public health science research.

Held at the UHS Dongphosy campus, the event showcased various research outputs from UHS scientists, including a lot of Health Technology Assessment Projects which is a growing research theme in the country.

It was an inspiring opportunity to engage with fellow researchers and exchange knowledge. LOMWRU is proud to be part of this national effort and looks forward to continued collaboration in driving impactful, evidence-based research for the health and well-being of all.

🌟 Our antimicrobial use (AMU) survey is underway!

This week we kicked off the National Antimicrobial Use (AMU) Survey at Mahosot Hospital withand next up is Mother & Child Hospital and Mitthaphab Hospital to follow!

his critical work is building on our successful Training of Trainers session held in August, setting the stage for smooth, collaborative data collection.

Led by our dedicated Senior Clinical Researcher, Dr. Vilada Chansamouth, the LOMWRU monitoring team, in partnership with the Department of Healthcare and Rehabilitation, is teaming up with hospital staff across nearly 30 inpatient wards and outpatient departments. Together, we’re capturing essential insights into how antimicrobials are being used to help shape better stewardship across Laos.

The survey at central hospitals continues through mid September, followed by hospitals in Southern and Northern Laos.and later at southern hospitals.

LOMWRU's will continues to promote appropriate antimicrobial use and we’re proud to support a national survey on antimicrobial use in Lao hospitals!

On Thursday, 28th August 2025, two representatives from LOMWRU’s CTSG (Clinical Trials Support Group) and Public Engagement Team joined the 2nd MORU Community and Public Engagement Day collaborating alongside MORU, CCRU and SMRU teams.

MORU Community and Public Engagement Day aimed to highlight creative and diverse approaches to engaging communities in our research and showcased a wide range of impactful Community & Public Engagement (CPE) initiatives across the MORU Tropical Health Network. Moreover, it was a great opportunity for other departments to deepen their understanding of how each Unit contributes to meaningful community work.

The exhibition featured eight dynamic booths displaying communication material and frameworks from across MORU. For LOMWRU, we showcased the Vientiane CAB and Pint of Science Laos, sharing our engagement strategies, lessons learned, achievements and plans for the future.

Here’s to building stronger bonds between research and community!
