We are back with our posts! Starting today!

Chronos is the most easily recognizable titan in Greek mythology. He is the embodiment of time and eternity, and is portrayed either withered, old, and carrying a sickle or youthful spinning the wheels of the heavens.

Most individuals think of Chronos as a villain. This is not the case. Chronos was worshipped in the ancient world, even if not very often. As the god of time, most often it's slow decay on humans and mortal creatures/plants he was heavily associated with the agricultural cycle. His rituals under his Roman version of Saturn eventually gave rise to most midwinter festivals and the earliest forms of a recognizable "Christmas" season. He was the force that moved the stage of the universe and his worship kept the "universal clock" flowing.

While he did eat his children, he nearly suffered a similar fate in his youth. Chronos is the son of Gaea and Ouranos, the earth and sky. Since his birth, Chronos was known to be wily and bold. Like most fathers in Greek mythology Ouranos wasn't earning a "Father of the year" badge any time soon.

He was known to mistreat Gaea and if he thought any other children were ugly he would hide them away so they never saw the light such as the hundred handed giants, and many primordial monsters.

Gaea and Ouranos' earlier children and the rest of the Titans Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, Thea, Rhea, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, and Thethys were all offered a flint sickle by Gaea to maim or kill Ouranos. Chronos was the only one who took the sickle then waited for his father to approach his mother.

As Ouranos was beginning to attack Gaea, Chronos grabbed his father's legs and castrated Ouranos. The blood of his father then grew into new gods, nymphs, and creatures. Chronos then took Rhea for his wife, and they peacefully led a golden age of humanity.

Unfortunately, after castrating his father Chronos was cursed to meet the same fate his father had. As his paranoia grew with each child Rhea had, history eventually repeated itself with his son Zeus who cut him to bits and placed his remains in the lowest part of the worst pits of the underworld.

The sign of the crab is one of the most tender and caring signs in the zodiac.

Cancer's symbol is less easy to distinguish as related to its animal counterpart. It looks a bit like the number sixty nine rotated 90° either left or right (♋).

The Mul Apin charts don't give much to cancer outside of a name and figure. In Mul Apin records cancer isn't known as a crab but rather a crayfish or crawdad which resembles a miniature lobster.

Cancer takes its season in the sky from about June 21st to July 22nd. Cancer contains no overly bright stars, with her brightest star being a magnitude of 3.6 and relatively dim. Despite Cancer's stars not being the flashiest, it's rare to find a cancer who isn't loving, loyal, patient, and kind.

A sharp juxtaposition from the otherwise well... crabby nature of the animal counterpart. (Sorry not sorry about the pun) Cancer ending up in the sky is often told by Greek astronomers as a crab, lobster, or crayfish, which pinched Hercules on the foot distracting him during a mighty battle with the Lernaean Hydra.

Hercules, not wanting to be dragon food for the Hydra crushed the poor crustacean underfoot to avoid further distractions as he slew the monster. Hera, who hated Hercules from the day he was born, gave Cancer an immortal place in the night sky for its efforts in annoying Hercules during his 12 labors.

All aboard the magic history bus!

Today we look at the Mycenaean age! If you've been following our historical posts on the history of Greece the Mycenaean age is generally what most people classify as the beginning of Ancient Greece properly.

The Mycenaean people lived on the mainland of the Greek peninsula, named after their largest city Mycenae. This period of history lasted from about 1600BC to about 1100BC.

Many Mycenaean rulers eventually find themselves in a blend of mythology and history and contact from middle to late Minoan peoples gave them a wider eye on the rest of the Aegean and Mediterranean.

Cities of the Mycenaean people were advanced for their time period, containing fortifications carved from naturally existing stone, irrigation and canals, bridges, tholos, and beehive shaped tombs. Palaces from this era of history have ruins that are still available to visit and show the beginnings of the most common structures for temples and houses in Ancient Greece.

Perhaps due to the ease of ability to find natural resources over wider land areas Mycenaean peoples were exceedingly good traders with some relics found as far as Cyprus and Sicily.

However, as Mycenaean influence began to spread, so did their language and culture. Soon, the island of Crete came under the control of the Mycenaean people and so did all the former territories of the Minoan civilization, including the Cycladic islands.

Fortifications at island holds were never quite as grand as their mainland counterparts but they still displayed the extravagance of Mycenaean engineering. Many famous names of this age feature prominently in Greek mythology as individuals like Odysseus, Agamemnon, Menelaus, Achilles, and more as writers from very late in or just after the Mycenaean age begin having prominent written records of conquering heroes from past glories.

Conflicting theories about the demise of the Mycenaean civilization are hotly debated. Some believe that continued struggles with conquered territories resulting in the destruction of a few cities contributed to a lack of enforcing authority.

Some believe that natural disasters of this time period made it difficult to support the population. Others still think overpopulation in the cities made unsustainable patterns causing social unrest and upheavals.

Perhaps it was a combination of all 3 of these factors or other reasons lost to time that the Mycenaean civilization slowly fizzled into ruin.

Chrysoprase is a green stone that is a mix of apple green and lemon. It is a common stone that can be found in the United States, Russia, Brazil, Australia, Poland, and Tanzania.

This crystal imparts a sense of being part of the divine whole, so being more than yourself. It helps to induce a deep meditative state and is said to promote love of truth. It promotes hope and helps to give you personal insights.

It draws out talents and stimulates creativity as well as encourages loyalty in business and in personal relationships. This crystal is great for energizing the power of te heart and sacral chakras, bringing universal energy into the mortal person wearing or owning it.

On the mental front, this stone helps people to not be egotistical, is calming, and helps to bring openness in new situations. If one is egotistical, it helps to look at the motive behind those actions and see the effect they have had on your development.

This stone is a good stone for helping with forgiveness and compassion. It helps with fluent speech and mental dexterity. Chrysoprase helps to not speak unthinkingly in anger and it lifts oppressive and recurrent images thus preventing nightmares.

This stone brings a sense of security and trust, helping to heal codependence, supporting indepence and yet encouraging commitment.

This is a great crystal to have in any collection!

Today we turn our attention to some of the titans in Hellenic mythology!

While many people view the titans with disdain and villainy, they're just as complex as the gods and mortals that have more fame. Rhea being one of these examples.

Records of Rhea can be found among some of the earliest records of the gods as we know them from Hesiod's Theogony in 800BC-700BC with her character becoming clarified by 500BC-400BC. Rhea is strongly associated with another goddess, Cybele, a fertility and mountain goddess of the wilds. Some records use their names interchangeably so Cybele may be an offshoot goddess from another title of Rhea or vice versa.

Regardless, Rhea is a child of Gaia and Ouranos like many of the other titans. Ouranos hated his children and imprisoned them below the earth in Tartarus. Gaia, who hated her husband for this foretold that Ouranos would be overthrown by one of his children.

However, only Chronos was brave enough to castrate his father and free his siblings. Rhea his sister ended up being his chosen consort where he began to repeat the sins of his father, eventually leading to his eventual dethroning by Zeus, king of the gods.

Rhea is the mother goddess of many of the Olympians, including Hestia, Hades, Poseidon, Demeter, Hera, and Zeus. Rhea ended up being instrumental to Zeus's overthrow of Chronos as she raised him and kept him hidden with the help of her attendants the Korybantes.

Rhea was worshipped through battle dances of clashing shields to replicate the Korybantes and their clamor to drown out the sounds of infant Zeus and keep him hidden from his father as he grew.

Depicted with lions, Rhea is a fierce and wild goddess who is considered the protectress and mother of the gods themselves.

Let's talk about ancient egyptian demon snakes!!

Apophis, also known as Apep or Apepi was a demon snake who was the main enemy of Ra/Re as he made his nightly journey through the underworld.

He was created by the Ancient Egyptians to explain the powers of dissolution, darkness, and non-being. He is depicted as a giant serpent who was believed to exsist from the start of time in the primordial waters. (See my origin myth post to learn about that) It was this myth that created the endless cycle of attack, defeat, and re-attack that the myth holds.

As Ra/Re traveled through the underworld Apep would try to stop the boat by drinking up the river water (hoping to stall the boat and create endless darkness. He also tried to stop Ra/Re by hypnotizing him.

On murals and in depictions he is often shown riualistically cut up into pieces. He is associated with negative natural events such as unexplained darkness, storms, and earthquakes.

Although in the original myth Set protects the boat of Ra/Re and uses magic to force Apep to submit. Eventually Apep became associated with Set and became a symbol of the forces that were hostile towards the other gods.
