Inflammation isn’t always obvious.

It can show up as fatigue, joint aches, poor sleep, bloating, brain fog, skin issues or stubborn hormonal symptoms, long before anything appears on a test result.

The good news is that reducing your inflammatory load doesn’t have to start with a complete lifestyle overhaul.

Small things you do today can begin to shift things in the right direction.

Try one of these:
🍵 A cup of green tea (remember green tea contains caffeine so limit to before lunch)
🫐 A handful of berries
🛏 An earlier night

Simple actions. Real impact when done consistently.

Which one feels most doable for you today?

PS: If you'd like a structured way to put this into practice, my Nourish & Thrive Plan includes a full week of anti-inflammatory meals designed to help calm inflammation and support energy, digestion and hormone balance. Runs 20rh-26th April, doors close midnight Tuesday 14th April.

Many women tell me their symptoms have become harder to manage in their 40s.

- Fatigue has deepened.
- Joint pain has increased.
- Digestive symptoms have worsened.

And often, this is happening at the same time as perimenopause.

This isn’t a coincidence.

Oestrogen plays an important role in regulating immune function. When hormones fluctuate significantly (as they do during perimenopause), immune responses can change too.

For some women this can mean existing autoimmune symptoms flare, or underlying issues become more noticeable. Autoimmune disease if much more prevalent amongst women and often presents around hormone transitions such as pregnancy or menopause. This was the case for me with my rheumatoid arthritis being diagnosed shortly after the birth of my second child.

Midlife health is rarely about one single system. Hormones, immune function, stress and nutrition are all connected.

If this resonates with your experience, you’re not alone.

Which symptom has felt harder to manage recently?

LESSON 10: Your body is amazing. It wants to be well, listen to it, nourish it.

I hope you’ve found my 10 lessons on living with chronic illness helpful and perhaps a little comforting or even inspiring?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on which resonated and which didn’t. Is there anything else you’d add?

Finally, know that you’re not alone. There are millions of us living with autoimmunity and it is possible to live well!

If you’re ever looking for some support, I’d love to help! Just get in touch and we can have a chat 😊

March is Autoimmune Awareness Month. It’s estimated that autoimmune disease impacts up to 1 in 10 of the UK population, with women being twice as likely to suffer as men.

I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis 15 years ago and now successfully keep it in remission through diet & lifestyle. I’ve been medication free for 4 years.
I wrote a blog post 5 years ago, reflecting on what I’d learnt about living with a chronic illness over the previous 10 years. I thought I’d take the opportunity to share that with you over this month.

LESSON 9: Everyone is different.

A short one today and I know I referred to this previously but it is important. Everyone is different and their experience of chronic illness (even the same illness!) is likely to be different too.

We don't want to ignore others, their experience and advice, but equally we can't assume what has worked for them will work for us and that's ok, just because one thing hasn't worked, doesn't mean nothing will.

I see this all the time in clinic, there is no 'one-size fits all' when it comes to chronic illness.

One of the reasons anti-inflammatory eating can feel difficult isn’t lack of motivation.

It’s trying to change too much at once.

These are the most common mistakes I see:
- Trying to do everything at once
- Overcomplicating meals
- Cutting too many foods too quickly
- Relying on constant snacking
- Aiming for perfection instead of consistency

In practice, simple structured meals often make the biggest difference.

Usually I suggest starting with:

- Reducing common inflammatory triggers
- Increasing colourful plant foods
- Balancing meals
- Supporting blood sugar with regular eating

Often just moving to three meals a day creates a noticeable shift in energy and digestion.

This is exactly the approach I’ve built into my Nourish & Thrive 7-day anti-inflammatory meal plan, a simple structure so you don’t have to keep working out what to eat each day.

Lesson 8: You have to be your own champion

This can be really difficult when you're in pain, overwhelmed and confused about what your diagnosis means. It can be particularly challenging when dealing with medical professionals and their expertise. However....Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself, only you can be the expert on you!

We are all unique and each individual’s experience of chronic illness, what makes them feel better or worse is also unique.

By all means take advice and help from others but don’t discount your own lived experience. What is right for some people may not be right for you.
