🤔 What is a keto diet? Also known as a ketogenic diet, it’s an eating plan that typically consists of low carbs and is high in fats. It requires the elimination or reduction of sugars from the diet. Diets can consist of relies of meats, leafy greens, vegetables, nuts, fats, oils and sweeteners. On average, macros on a keto diet are typically 55 to 60% fats, 30 to 35% protein and 5 to 10% carbohydrates 🥒🥩🥗

How does it work? 🧐 By eliminating carbohydrates from your diet, your body is deprived of the ability to utilise sugar for energy. Instead, the body breaks down fats in the liver into ketone bodies. This metabolic process that the body goes through due to the starvation of carbohydrates is called ketosis.

Benefits of a keto diet: There is some evidence to suggest that ketogenic diets can help you lose weight. This in turn can yoThis can potentially reduce the risk of developing prediabetes or type 2 diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity due to the effects of increased metabolism.

Cautions when taking adhering to a keto diet: Side effects may vary from dehydration, acidosis (an influx of acid in the body), constipation and low blood sugar levels. There’s also an anecdotal condition known as keto flu. This condition stems from the elimination of carbohydrates and sugar, which causes withdrawal symptoms. These can include headache, fogginess, dizziness, lack of energy and nausea.
