The Heart Health Program is both the pediatric weight management program of the MUSC Children’s Hospital and the preventive cardiology service of the Children's Heart Center. As a family-centered and lifestyle-oriented program, Heart Health is appropriate for any child or adolescent who has abnormal weight gain and/or associated cardiovascular risk factors, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or pre-diabetes. Charleston, Summerville, and Mt. Heart Health has also partnered with MUSC’s Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence to form the new MUSC Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program, directed by Dr. Karl Byrne, with Dr. Henshaw (also board certified in obesity medicine) serving as the program’s pediatric medical advisor. Heart Health provides pre-op and post-op weight management guidance and support to adolescents meeting established criteria for bariatric surgery.
