Can you buy anything and everything you want?
For most people, the answer is no.
Most people have some form of income each month. Some people have a fixed and consistent income, whereas for other people it might vary. Either way, the amount they have available to spend each month is largely dictated by this income.
What happens if the amount you spend each month exceeds your income?
You begin to accumulate debt.
The concept of energy balance for weight loss and weight maintenance is no different.
We all have a set amount of energy required to live and perform our daily activities (energy expenditure). For some people the level of energy required remains fairly consistent from day to day. For other people it might vary. Either way, the amount of energy their body requires through food and drink is dictated by their energy expenditure.
What happens if the energy you consume on a daily basis through food and drink exceeds the energy you expend?
You begin to accumulate (increase) body weight.
So what is the solution?

How would you go about reducing your debt? You could either earn more money (increase your income), reduce your spending by making some lifestyle changes, or a combination of both.
You might decide to cut down from two cars to one.
You may decide to start cooking more meals from home and eating out less.
You might attend fewer social events. Or holiday less.
Ultimately there are numerous different lifestyle changes available to any individual, and what works best for one person is not necessarily same for the next. We all lead different lives and have different things within our lives which are meaningful to us.
How does this relate to weight loss / weight maintenance?
If your goal is weight loss, you could either increase the amount of energy you use on a daily basis, reduce the energy you take in through food and drink, or a combination of both.
