This week, we had the privilege of welcoming ITV into our clinic, where they met Harper, one of the amazing children we support. Their visit provided a powerful platform to raise awareness of SMA and to share Harper’s journey — a story of determination, courage, and the real impact of accessible treatment and specialised therapy. We are deeply grateful to ITV for helping to shine a light on this important issue.

SMA is a genetic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and wasting, resulting from the loss of motor neurons in the spinal cord. The condition affects movement, and in many cases, breathing and swallowing as well. The severity and age of onset can vary widely — but every child deserves the chance to reach their fullest potential.

Since 2019, treatments such as Nusinersen (Spinraza) and Risdiplam (Evrysdi) have given hope to families across England, funded by the NHS through Managed Access Agreements (MAA). NICE is now reviewing whether this access should continue through a Multiple Technology Appraisal (MTA) process — a decision that will determine if thousands of people living with SMA can keep receiving the care they depend on.

This is a time of uncertainty for everyone in the SMA community. At Xcel HEALTH, we stand shoulder to shoulder with families, children, and advocacy groups to ensure that every individual with SMA has full access and choice when it comes to disease-modifying treatments.
We’ve seen the difference these treatments make. We’ve seen children grow stronger, more confident, and more independent. And we know how vital it is that this progress continues.
