Olive Oil 101: When It Heals, When It Hurts

Not all oils are created equal. Even the healthiest ones can lose their healing power if used the wrong way.

Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) is rich in polyphenols and oleic acid, compounds that calm inflammation, support heart health, and protect your cells from oxidative stress. But when it’s overheated past its smoke point (around 375 °F), those same protective compounds start to break down. The result? Smoke compounds -oxidized fats and free radicals that do the opposite of what you want.

✨ Use it right:

Drizzle it over salads, soups, and roasted veggies after cooking.

Keep bottles sealed, stored cool, and away from light - heat and air destroy antioxidants.

Choose cold-pressed, extra-virgin with a fresh, peppery taste. That “bite” means it’s packed with polyphenols.

🔥 Use another oil for high-heat cooking:
For searing, stir-frying, or oven temps above 400 °F, reach for avocado or grapeseed oil — a clean, neutral oil with a higher smoke point that won’t oxidize as easily.

🩺 Bottom line:
It’s not just what oil you use — it’s how you use it that turns food into medicine. Small daily choices like this protect your heart, your brain, and your longevity.

Not all “nutrition experts” are the same.

👩‍⚕️ Registered Dietitians (RDs) complete years of university study, 1,000+ hours of supervised training, and national licensing exams - just like other healthcare professionals.

The title “nutritionist” isn’t regulated in most states. It can mean anyone - from a vitamin salesperson to an influencer with no formal training.

💡 That’s what sets Food RX Assistant apart.

🌿 What does “root cause of disease” really mean?

Most health advice focuses on managing symptoms - pills, numbers, quick fixes. But symptoms are just the branches 🍃.

The roots are the underlying drivers of health: diet quality, inflammation, stress, sleep, environment, and cultural factors. When we focus on nourishing the roots, the whole body can thrive. 🌱

This is what Food RX Blueprint is all about; going beyond symptom management to address the root causes with evidence, culture, and practical lifestyle change.

Save this post as a reminder: healing starts beneath the surface.

As a Registered Dietitian (RD) working in primary care, one of the most disheartening parts of my job is seeing so many patients who need nutrition care - but can’t access it.

Medicare and most private insurers covers Medical Nutrition Therapy for a very narrow set of conditions:
-Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
-Non-dialysis chronic kidney disease
-Up to 36 months after a kidney transplant

This leaves common conditions like hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, heart disease, obesity, digestive disorders, cancer, and more, uncovered, forcing patients to pay out of pocket, often $100–$250 per session. For many, that’s simply not an option.

So, where do patients turn when they can’t see an RD?
Doctors and nurses - trusted, but often under-trained in nutrition. The research backs this up:

🩺 About 62 % of general practitioners scored below 50 % on basic nutrition knowledge assessments.

🩻 1 in 4 surgeons admit they don’t feel capable of recognizing nutritional risk in their patients.

👩‍⚕️ Only 11.9 % of nurses knew when a patient is at risk of malnutrition.

🧍‍⚕️ Nurses' nutrition knowledge averaged 50-55% in many settings.

Many others patients end up searching online, sifting through fads and conflicting advice.

The result is fragmented, inconsistent care.

That is why I created Food RX Assistant.
To bridge the gap between need and access, culture and science, and misinformation and evidence.

🥩 Mechanically separated meat.

It sounds technical, but here’s the truth: it’s made by pushing animal carcass remnants through a high-pressure sieve to squeeze out soft tissue, marrow, and connective bits, creating a pink, paste-like product 😬.

You’ll often find it in:
🌭 Hot dogs
🥫 Vienna sausage
🍗 Chicken nuggets & patties
🥪 Processed lunch meats

These products are ultra-processed, often high in sodium and preservatives, and far removed from whole foods.

✨ At Food RX Blueprint, our goal isn’t fear - it’s awareness.
🧠 Because not all foods are medicine, and understanding what’s in your food helps you make intentional, nourishing choices 🌿. Use the Premium Tier of the Food RX Assistant app to help make both intentional and personalized choices. Link in bio.

Turmeric vs Ibuprofen 🌿💊

Can food really work like medicine? Some studies say yes.

👉 In one clinical trial, 3 capsules of turmeric extract (500 mg each, daily) worked as well as a standard daily dose of ibuprofen (6 OTC tablets = 1,200 mg total) for knee pain relief (PubMed 24672232).

✨ Bonus: The turmeric group reported fewer stomach side effects than those taking ibuprofen.

⚠️ Important to know:

These results are from concentrated turmeric extract (curcumin), not just turmeric spice.

To get the same curcumin from food, you’d need 2–5 tablespoons of turmeric powder daily, much more than you’d normally use in cooking.

Make sure your curcumin supplement contains black pepper (piperine) that is needed to boost effectiveness.

Always talk to your healthcare provider, especially if you’re on medications.

Turmeric is just one example of how foods and nutrients can work like medicine. 🌱

Medications are powerful; they’re designed to target one pathway and lower symptoms or lab numbers. 💊

But foods? They work differently. 🌿

Foods provide multiple nutrients and compounds that address not only the symptoms but also the root causes of illness, with minimal side effects and benefits for your whole body.

That’s the power of Food as Medicine. ✨
