Money Nuts & Bolts

Money Nuts & Bolts I’m a therapist turned money coach who helps therapists feel calm and in control of their finances. I’m like half therapist, half bookkeeper.

As the daughter of an accountant, I inherited a good dose of bookkeeping brain. So when I went into private practice I dug right into all the ways to build a healthy business that pays for my life and always has extra money in the bank.

I also saw my super skilled colleagues struggle with the money side of business. Some had even left private practice, or were avoiding starting one, because the money side was too stressful. So I put my lucky combination of people and money skills together, and Nuts & Bolts was born. I help therapists develop peace of mind about their money. Since so many of us were never taught about money, I focus the “how” of making the financial side of private practice doable, and even super satisfying (feeling competent and calm about your money is pretty swell!)

I offer in-person and online one-on-one financial consulting, and online resources to help your money skills grow.

Have you ever felt guilty for taking a break from work? Do you find it challenging to balance your creative pursuits with your professional responsibilities? If so, you’re not alone.

Many therapists struggle with feelings of guilt or abandonment if they take time away from their practice and worry that clients will need them while they’re away or won’t return to therapy once the vacation has ended…

But as a therapist, it’s essential to find a balance between work responsibilities and creative pursuits, while also ensuring financial stability and being intentional about taking breaks to recharge.

Overcoming the fear of taking time off is a journey that requires self-awareness, resilience, and a willingness to prioritize your well-being. And it’s a journey we explore in my latest podcast episode with (LMFT and graduate of the Money Skills for Therapists course).

Tune in for more tangible takeaways on this topic and be sure to save this post for a gentle reminder to build rest into your work and your life ✨

We’re kicking off a new season of the Money Skills for Therapists podcast with an episode with returning guest (and my business bestie) Maegan Megginson all about our shared experiences of being the female breadwinners in our households 🏆

It’s no secret that relationships come with their fair share of challenges, and they can become even more difficult to navigate when one person earns the majority of the household income…

I find it’s becoming more common for me to work with female practice owners who are the primary breadwinner in their relationship, and while this shift in dynamics is a positive step towards gender equality, it can bring its own set of challenges and complexities 🙃

The good news is that open and honest communication between both partners about responsibilities, expectations, and goals, can help build and sustain a solid and equitable partnership.

As a kid, I was jealous of my classmate taking singing lessons 🎤. I thought only good singers could do that. And I wasn’t, so I could never take singing lessons. (A note from adult Linzy: This is not how lessons work. But to my little kid brain, this was the truth.)

Fast forward 30 years. I told that story to one of my team members, and being the exceptionally thoughtful person she is, she gave me a gift certificate for singing lessons.

🎶 After just eight lessons, I found myself belting out "Stand By Me" at my parents' anniversary, feeling both nervous and proud.

I’m not saying it was my musical debut, but it made my parents really happy, and was what my voice teacher calls “type 2 fun.”

Type 2 Fun is the kind of fun that’s challenging in the moment, but SO rewarding in retrospect. 🎯 It's the stretch, the effort, the pride.

Guess what? Group practice finances are Type 2 Fun too! 💪

Doors are now open for the May 2025 cohort of Money Skills for Group Practice Owners.

As I’ve been chatting with group practice owners in discovery calls over the last week, the emotions I see as they decide to take the leap and join the course is a big mix of nervousness, excitement, some resistance (of course!), some curiosity, and hope. The hope that they can learn the skills and mindset to step up and own their role as the financial leader of their group practice.

That’s the starting point for Type 2 Fun. Money Skills for Group Practice Owners is also gonna be type 2 fun. 🤗

😳⬇️Is this you?

When we feel ineffective and confused with money, it’s tempting to want to just pass the responsibility off to someone else, like a bookkeeper or accountant, hoping that they will take care of it for you, aka to throw your financial baby at them.

No more need to worry about the finances…after all, there’s a professional taking care of it now. Isn’t that more than enough?

Unfortunately, it’s not.

This is what happens when we think of hiring out bookkeeping as a substitute for learning how to really own your responsibility for your practice’s financial health:

🤔 You get all sorts of reports from your bookkeeper or accountant each month, and you have no idea what they mean.

🤷🏻‍♀️ You’re still as confused and disempowered about your group practice finances as ever.

😶‍🌫️ You’re not able to take care of your business’s or your financial needs, because you’re not claiming your role as the financial leader of your practice (aka the true caretaker for your financial baby.)

I know multiple, super successful, high-revenue business owners who feel like a total hot mess financially. They have bookkeepers and accountants who give them reports, but they look at the numbers and they’re meaningless to them.

“Are these good numbers? Is there money here to hire someone? Am I paying myself too much or too little?”

With group practice, this confusion becomes especially detrimental, because what you’ve built is that much more complex and the stakes are higher for you. Without having the knowledge and confidence to understand your numbers and do something about them, you can’t make money really work in your group practice.

Here’s the good news: It doesn’t have to be this way.

🤩 The doors are open now for applications for Money Skills for Group Practice Owners for our May 2025 cohort.
