Sacred statue in small beautiful temple, Pejeng Kangin, Ubud, Bali 🌴🕉️🪷 I am not sure this statue represents which character but the looks is so artistic and old because some fungi grow around this temple.
Not only in this area, If you walk through the streets of Bali, you’ll notice many statues everywhere. From grand temples to small village corners, from family home entrances to rice fields, in the intersection of the street, bridge, cemetery, and many more. These stone figures stand quietly, watching over the island. Some depict Hindu gods like Ganesha and Shiva, Durga, Wisnu, Brahma etc, while others represent demons, buddha, guardian spirits or legendary figures from Balinese belief. These statues are not just decorations. They have deep cultural and spiritual meaning.
In Balinese tradition, they are placed to protect homes, temples, and even roads from negative energy. Every morning, locals place small offerings of flowers and incense at their feet or in their head, treating them with the same respect as they would a living being. 🪷🧘🏻♀️
Many of these statues tell stories from ancient epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, Hindu gods, while others represent Bali’s unique mythology. You might see Barong, the lion-like protector, or Rangda, the fearsome queen of dark magic, both important figures in Balinese dance and storytelling. The craftsmanship behind these statues is incredible, each one is carefully carved by skilled artisans, often from volcanic rock found in Bali. Over time, moss and age give them an even more mystical look, making them blend beautifully with nature. Whether you’re exploring Ubud’s temples, walking through a traditional Balinese village, or simply passing by a roadside shrine, these statues remind you that Bali is not just a place of stunning landscapes but also a land rich in history, spirituality, and tradition. 🪷🕉️
