Public Health Advisory: Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a highly contagious viral illness. It is common among children but can affect people of all ages.

Infection is through direct contact with bodily fluids (like droplets from coughing) and contaminated objects (objects used by infected persons).

Signs and symptoms include:
- fever
- painful sores in the mouth, tongue, gums, and the insides of the cheeks
- loss of appetite
- sore throat
- non-itchy rash of small, red spots on the palms, soles of the feet, and buttocks

Most cases are mild and last only a few days but HFMD could also lead to serious complications if not properly managed.

Prevent HFMD infection!

1) Keep your hands clean. Wash your hands with soap and water frequently, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers especially after touching doorknobs and surfaces in classrooms and common areas.

2) Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing. Use a face mask in public transportation and crowded places. Dispose of used tissues and face masks properly.

3) Observe physical distancing.

4) Avoid sharing personal items like utensils, towels, phones, and toys.

5) Avoid or minimize spending time in spaces with poor ventilation.

6) Stay home if you feel unwell or develop symptoms like fever and rashes.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MPOX

The Department of Health (DOH) released interim technical guidelines for Mokeypox surveillance, screening, management, and infection control.

Access the guidelines here: bit.ly/MonkeypoxFacts

DOH reminds the public to consistently adhere to safety protocols such as covering their mouth when coughing or sneezing, washing hands frequently, and refraining from having “close and intimate” contact.

Stay safe and informed.
