At , student voice and choice matters!

Middle Schoolers at AlhambraTraditional voted on two homemade recipes to help us decide which one to feature on next year’s menu: 1) Sopa de Fideo (Noodle Soup) or 2) Sopa de Albóndigas (Meatball Soup).

Team 1 and Team 2 from our Menu Development Team threw down and cooked up samples of each recipe. Then our team passed out samples and asked students to vote on which recipe would be crowned the “Recipe of the Year” by voting “yes” or “no” on both recipes.

The recipe that had 1,203 “yes” votes and a 94% student approval rating was... Sopa de Fideo (Noodle Soup)!

Huge shoutout to the Menu Development Team as a whole for working very hard to share homemade recipes that were from the heart.

And to all AESD students, be on the look out for HOMEMADE Sopa de Fideo on next year’s menu!

🤔 Who would want to choose between empanadas and taquitos?

Not too many people, but the GAP Cafe Crew was up for the challenge!

The AESD Child Nutrition department conducted a student taste test to decide what items should be added on next year’s lunch menu.

“With great power comes great responsibility.”

Thank you Cafe Crew for helping us decide what goes on the menu!

Can you guess which NEW homemade item will be featured for National School Breakfast Week?

It’s homemade Chocolate Co**has (a type of Mexican Sweet Bread)!

These past couple of months our bakery team has been hard at work perfecting this recipe and we can’t wait to debut it with students next Thursday (3/5) in celebration for National School Breakfast Week.

Come through the cafeteria for a fun week where we will be featuring brunch for lunch, homemade Chocolate Co**has, and prizes for “Lucky Tray” winners!

🥣 Another comfort food turned into a school-approved homemade recipe!

This year, our Menu Development Team split into two separate teams to test out two different “Recipes of the Year,” and the theme that came out of both of these recipe ideas was... Comfort food.

Team 1 worked together to create the first draft of their “Recipe of the Year” - Sopa de Fideo (Noodle Soup)! This classic comfort recipe was adapted from a recipe that our team often makes at home, so it is made with EXTRA love.

Fideo is one of the two recipes we will be taste testing this week with Middle Schoolers at Alhambra Traditional School. The other recipe we will be taste testing alongside this recipe is Team 2’s Sopa de Albóndigas (Meatball Soup).

We hope students are as excited to test it as we are to serve it!

🤔 Can you guess what we are cooking up?

This year, our Menu Development Team split into two separate teams to test out two different “Recipes of the Year,” and the theme that came out of both of these recipe ideas was... Comfort food.

Here you see Team 2 working together to create the first draft of their“Recipe of the Year.” Fresh vegetables, meatballs, broth, and homemade goodness all wrapped into one to create a school-approved version of Sopa de Albóndigas (Meatball Soup)!

Sopa de Albóndigas is a hearty soup that is cooked with heart that brings comfort to those who love it!

Next week, we will be taste testing this recipe with Middle Schoolers at Alhambra Traditional School. We can’t wait to hear what students think!

👩‍🍳 “Chefs, you have arrived at the Chopping Block.”

At our Managers’ Meeting this month, we decided to switch it up and host a “Chopped-style” competition as a refresher on the recipe standardization process. Our Managers were challenged to create a new, fun Salad Bar recipe in 45 minutes.

Here’s the kicker: they didn’t learn about the competition until they arrived for the meeting that SAME day, didn’t KNOW which ingredients would be available to them, and couldn’t look up ANY recipes for inspiration. 😳

(It was fun to see what the Managers created on the fly, given such little time!)

Once time was up, we sampled everyone’s creations and voted on three award categories: 1) Most Creative Recipe (winner: Tamara), 2) Student-Centered Recipe (winner: Kristy), and 3) Most Detailed Recipe (winner: Karla). 🏆

This competition was a unique way to refresh our understanding of the recipe standardization process while meeting the USDA’s annual professional development requirements.

Keep following us for more sneak peeks into all that goes into serving school meals!

😎 The cool kids’ table loved celebrating Pozole Party day with us today at Madrid Neighborhood School!

(Honestly, ALL our students are cool kids.)❤️

Today Child Nutrition Director, Brienne Ross, went and ate some of our homemade Pozole Verde with students at today. This was the adorable footage she captured. It was too cute NOT to share!

Congratulations to all our Lucky Tray winners and a huge thank you to our amazing cafeteria teams who made our first ever Pozole Party a success! 🙌

🤩 Last weekend, four middle school teams from AESD competed in ’s Feeding the Future culinary competition and created school-approved breakfast dishes.

Naturally, an AESD Child Nutrition team member had to go check it out! She is happy to report that she enjoyed every moment of the event and loved seeing AESD students shine in this culinary competition.

So what did AESD students serve up?

1) Burrito Sabanero (This team won first place out of 10 competing teams!)
2) Masala Chicken Bowl

CatalinaAESD served:
3) Berry Crepe Delight
4) Deliciosas Chilaquiles

(Spoiler Alert: All four dishes were DELICIOUS.)

Haven’t heard of Feeding the Future before? Feeding the Future is a “student recipe competition to serve up a delicious and compliant USDA school tray, featuring Arizona ingredients and love to school food professionals.”

Congrats to all four teams who competed and to our first-place winners, Eduardo, Giselle, Nicol, and Ms. Tomala!
