New Year's safety tips for a responsible and fun celebration

Offer plenty of nonalcoholic drinks and keep fireworks well away from the house. Most mishaps come from icy steps, crowded rooms, or a rushed decision at the end of the night, so a few steady habits go a long way.

Always designate a sober driver, or if nowhere else, call a taxi or Uber or stay over at where you are celebrating. If you have had too much to drink-don't get behind the wheel. Remember never to furnish alcohol to minors.

New Year's Eve is always busy on the roads. Take longer to get where you're going and drive defensively. Plan ahead and have a designated driver or other safe transportation plan so you don't take the risk.

Key Statistics

Impaired driving incidents spike during the holiday season, making December one of the most dangerous months for road safety.
Approximately 37 people die daily in the U.S. due to drunk-driving crashes, with December seeing a significant increase in these incidents.

Teen brain development

From early adolescence through the mid-to-late 20s, the brain develops somewhat unevenly. The parts of the brain to develop first are those that control physical activity (cerebellum), emotion (amygdala) and motivation (nucleus accumbens). The prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for impulse control, more reasoned thought and good judgment, develops later.

This pattern of teen brain development helps explain some common traits of teen behavior:

Difficulty holding back or controlling emotions
A preference for high-excitement, exploration and new activities
Inadequate planning and limited judgment
More risky, impulsive behaviors
With the prefrontal cortex — or one’s ‘voice of reason’ — developing last, it’s easier to understand why teens are so driven by emotion, excitement and short-term reward. This leads to unpredictable — and sometimes risky — behavior.

Unfortunately, developing brains are also more susceptible than the brains of adults to damage from outside influences. This means substance use during the teen years creates a more distinct risk for immediate and lasting harm.
