https://www.health.org.au/2025/03/07/mint-and-cucumber-salad/ This simple dish is a lovely summer side salad. Cooling and incredibly tummy-friendly, this dish is a great one for the holiday season.

Mint is renowned for its digestive benefits. It soothes indigestion, alleviates nausea, and helps with bloating. Paired with the hydrating properties of cucumber, this refreshing salad aids digestion and is perfect for a light lunch or as a side dish to any meal.

Did you know that postprandial (after eating) hyperglycemia is a key contributor to elevated HbA1c levels, which is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular issues and dementia? Just a quick 10-minute walk after your meal can significantly lower blood sugar spikes. In fact, a recent study published this year suggests that walking right after eating may be even more effective than a longer stroll taken later.

So, after your festive feasts this season, take a moment to step outside for a 10-minute walk. You might just spot who got the coolest new bikes for Christmas! 🚴‍♂️

Our History

The Natural Health Society of Australia was started in 1960 by Leslie Owen Bailey and Madge Cockburn. These two amazing people had worked together for many years. Mr Bailey had some health issues in his forties and found a book called “The Fast Way to Health” by a Dr McCoy. He started to follow the principles expounded by Dr McCoy and found that his health improved dramatically.

During the Second World War Mr Bailey set up a home for unmarried mothers to support them during their pregnancies. He provided a natural health diet and educated them in how to be healthy. During the course of the war about 200 mothers were helped. Many of the babies were adopted and for one reason or another, 86 of them were not able to be adopted. Mr Bailey set up Hopewood House on a 600 acre dairy farm at Bowral. These children had a very healthy diet and lifestyle and “the experiment” was observed by a Sydney doctor and dentist, Dr Goldsworthy. He discovered that these children were exceedingly healthy and had an excellent record of dental health compared with other Australian children on the same age at that time.

In 1960, the children were growing up and leaving home. Mr Bailey decided to do something for the wider community and set up Hopewood Health Retreat at Wallacia NSW where people could stay and experience the Natural Health lifestyle for a few days or weeks. If they had health issues, they could fast under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

At the same time Mr Bailey set up the Natural Health Society as a place where people could meet regularly to feel supported in their choice to live a Natural Health lifestyle and learn more about how to restore and maintain their health.
