⏰Please be advised that in October 2023, the Board identified that supervised experience for ASWs was being evaluated incorrectly by the LCSW Unit.

To correct this, the Board published an article in the Spring 2024 newsletter (https://bbs.ca.gov/pdf/newsletters/spring2024.pdf) and has issued multiple social media updates since that time.

Relevant Laws:

§ 4996.23.1 – Direct Supervisor Contact
(a) Except for experience gained through workshops, seminars, training sessions, or conferences:

1. At least one hour of direct supervisor contact is required each week experience is claimed for a work setting.

2. If an associate provides more than 10 hours of services under § 4996.23(d)(2) in a week, an additional hour of supervision is required for that setting.

§ 4996.23(d)(2)
A minimum of 2,000 hours must be in clinical psychosocial diagnosis, assessment, and treatment, including psychotherapy or counseling. At least 750 of these hours must be face‑to‑face psychotherapy.

What This Means for Weekly Logs:

In any week an ASW claims more than 10 hours in the clinical category (Box A), they must receive an additional unit of supervision. If this additional unit is not provided, the ASW may only count 10 clinical hours for that week.

The Board is currently seeing a high number of applications from ASWs who do not meet this requirement, which is delaying approval to sit for the ASWB Clinical Exam. All hours gained on or after July 1, 2024, are being evaluated strictly according to the laws above. It is essential that supervisors review these requirements with their supervisees to ensure compliance before applications are submitted.
