๐Ÿ‘‹ Meet Caryn!

Caryn is a member of OsteopathyBC and has been practicing osteopathy for over 20 years!
She enjoys treating all age groups, especially older individuals.

We asked Caryn what she believes people might like to learn about in terms of the osteopathic approach or how osteopathy fits into multidisciplinary healthcare. Her response was eloquent and succinct:

"We work on the whole body, not just one piece of it. We feel the connections between all the tissues and organs and integrate them for maximum therapeutic effect. We can be working on one part of the body and the client will feel it somewhere else at a distance. This is a moment of surprise for them because then they really see it first hand. Healing is a whole body experience and our job is to pull all the pieces together again."

๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽทYou may also be interested to learn that Caryn is a Jazz singer and performs in Vancouver. She describes that osteopathy has changed her singing in the sense that she is so aware now of even the healing effects of her voice. Singing has become less about her and more about she makes others feel.

When asked about her hobbies, Caryn describes being a nature nut.
"I simply have to be in the forest or by the ocean on a regular basis. No one is happier than me when Iโ€™m with the trees or the water. I feel very still and quiet inside. Total peace. It makes me better at everything including osteopathy!"

You can find Caryn practicing at Vancouver Osteopathy Centre.

David works with people who have chronic conditions and is drawn to the idea of trying to pierce the mystery health and wellness. David also really enjoys interacting with people and their unique presentations.

David's own interests revolve mostly around getting outdoors and being active: hiking, snowboarding, and hockey and as a dad trying to keep up with kids!

FAQ:
Does osteopathy hurt?

Osteopathic treatment should not be painful, although some discomfort may be experienced, especially if the area being worked on is particularly sore or tense. Your practitioner will adjust the treatment to your comfort level. In general, people feel soothed and relaxed and notice an improvement in pain and range of motion following osteopathic treatment.

Osteopathy works with the body, and as such, osteopathic practitioners are constantly monitoring the response of the tissues while carrying out a technique. Osteopathic treatment is a drug-free approach with little to no side-effects and is safe for people of all ages, from newborns to seniors.

How to Choose an Osteopathic Practitioner

In British Columbia, osteopathy is not a regulated health profession. This means that anyone can use the title โ€œOsteopathic Practitioner,โ€ and the title alone does not guarantee a specific level of education, training, or experience.

Because of this, itโ€™s important to do a bit of research when choosing a practitioner. Look for someone who is a member of a professional organization that upholds strong standards for education and practice, such as OsteopathyBC or an organization affiliated with the Canadian Federation of Osteopaths.

This helps ensure youโ€™re seeing a practitioner who has met recognized training and professional requirements.

How is osteopathy different from other healthcare professions like physiotherapy, chiropractic, and registered massage therapy?

Osteopathy is a distinct and complementary healthcare profession with its own rich development and philosophy. With a history spanning over 150 years, Osteopathy has evolved as a recognized form of integrative, patient-centred care which focuses on the interconnectedness of all body systems.

Using skilled analysis and palpation, Osteopathic Practitioners identify underlying causes of pain and dysfunction, then use manual techniques such as joint mobilizations, cranial, visceral and soft tissue manipulation to support and improve the bodyโ€™s natural ability to self-regulate and heal.

Many manual therapy techniques used by other professions have their roots in Osteopathyโ€™s long-standing tradition, but the holistic, patient-centred approach makes Osteopathy truly unique.
