Feeling deeply grateful—another Retreat: Into Nature is officially sold out.
And once again, I’m heading back to the raw beauty of Kangaroo Island.

This time around, Amy and I took a bold step.
We redesigned the program from the ground up—with the intention of creating something even more powerful.
A space where real change feels within reach, where growth happens naturally, and where each person feels fully supported in their own way.

Breathwork sits at the centre of it all—guided, intentional, and deeply moving.
Alongside the breath, we work with heat, cold, movement and sound—each playing a key role in helping the body release, reset, and reconnect.

We’ve chosen four distinct breathwork styles, each bringing something unique to the table—each one helping to create that inner shift we’re all looking for.

And of course, all of this is held by the magic that is Kangaroo Island—wild, grounding, and quietly awe-inspiring.

Now it’s time for me to step away for a bit… to slow down, breathe deep, and reconnect with the natural rhythm of things.

Catch you on the other side 🌿✨

Tension is sneaky. It builds in the body, silent, unseen, gradual—shoulders tightening, jaw tensing, breath shallowing.

We carry it unconsciously, often mistaking its weight for necessity, as if holding on gives us control.

But what if the power isn’t in the holding, but in the release?

Relaxation isn’t something we do—it’s what remains when tension dissolves. It’s not just an absence of stress; it’s a return to something deeper.

Breath is the key.

Each inhale gathers, each exhale surrenders.

When we breathe consciously, we give our bodies permission to soften, to unravel, to trust. And in that trust, we reconnect with our inner wisdom.

What would happen if you let go—fully, completely?

Pause. Inhale deep. Exhale slow. Repeat.

One of the most common sensations in breathwork is tetany—involuntary muscle contractions in the hands.

Or, as we in the biz like to call them… gang signs. ✌️😂

Here’s what’s really happening: Intense, prolonged breathing drops CO2 levels, raises pH, and increases calcium reabsorption—causing muscle neurons to fire spontaneously.

Tetany isn’t a badge of honor.
It’s not a sign of a “good session” or “stuck energy” (or any other wellness buzzword).

It’s your body telling you you’re exhaling too forcefully.

The fix? Soften your exhale.
Relax your diaphragm. Let the air escape naturally—don’t force it.

Too often, people chase big physical sensations and miss the deeper, quieter shifts unfolding beneath the surface.

Don’t be that person.

Listen. Tune in. The deeper parts of you have some really good things to say. ❤️

Your body is a powerful, positive force. Work with it. 💪💥❤️
“Most traditional methods of working on oneself are mostly pain centered. People get to repeat over and over their painful emotions without knowing how to use the body’s own inherently positive direction and force.” - Eugene Gendlin

Contrary to what you see on social media, breathwork isn’t just about breathing fast (that’s only one style).

Here’s 3 reasons why fast-paced breathing alone isn’t enough:

1)
Slower breathing is optimal for our body’s natural rhythms and offers key long-term benefits for mental and physical health—even more so than fast-paced techniques (Bentley 2023).

2)
Our average respiratory rate has increased over the past 200+ years, indicating that even at rest we’re under more stress today. Slow breathing practices have been shown to bring this rate down long term, a benefit that fast-paced only techniques don’t appear to deliver.

3)
Breathing dysfunction impacts a sizable portion of the population (e.g. about 8% experience hyperventilation syndrome). If your daily breathing is already off-balance, adding a stressful breathwork practice without addressing this dysfunction likely won’t help. Addressing your baseline breathing pattern is crucial for your long-term health.

Fast-paced breathwork definitely has its place—especially as a therapeutic tool.

But these days, I see it more as a ‘sometimes’ technique, used only when needed (for a quick boost or deeper self-exploration).

I’ll finish with something to think about: if fast-paced breathwork is your go-to, what’s your main reason for using it?

If you feel differently, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

When you hear the term ‘self-regulation’ what comes to mind?
Deescalate?
Pacify?
Suppress?
If so, here’s a different way to think about it...
A healthy nervous system is an adaptable one that can accurately & appropriately help us respond to stimuli... which occasionally includes uncomfortable s**t.
I look at self-regulation as the ability to move flexibly within our mental sweet spot - where we can handle stress (and strong emotions) without overwhelm or shutdown.
It’s not about deescalating stress, pacifying ourselves or suppressing those strong emotions. Sometimes we need to experience stress, to be provoked and to express.
Let me know what you think in the comments.

Are you just ticking a box with your cold exposure? ❄️☃️🥶
Do you get in, grit your teeth, zone out, get it done and tick it off your list for the day? ✅
You’re worth more than a mindless tick-and-flick activity.
Try this approach next time:
1) Be intentional - commit your energy to the activity
2) Be deliberate - enter the cold with purpose (don’t f-around)
3) Be present - lean in to your body’s response
4) Be humble - know where today’s edge is (mother nature wins 10/10)
5) Be unhurried - you’ve taken the time to step in, give yourself time when you step out (warm up naturally)
