🌟 Fathers truly embody strength and perseverance! 💪 In tough times, like when separation from their little ones in the hospital occurs, they face heart-wrenching guilt while still carrying the weight of family responsibilities. 🏡💔

Many don’t get the chance to take time off work to be by their children’s side, yet they wear a brave face, especially when moms start to feel overwhelmed. ❤️ They know that maintaining stability and support is crucial, and they rise to the challenge, often without recognition.

Muchos ni siquiera logran permiso en sus trabajos para poder estar cerca de sus pequeños, y aún así debe mantener la fuerza, sobre todo, cuando las mamás están cerca del desbordamiento emocional. ❤️ Ellos están listos para dar la tarea de ser fuentes de estabilidad y apoyo, aunque a veces este trabajo pasa desapercibido.

This year, we are committed to hosting an impactful event that highlights the vital role every dollar plays in our life-saving programs. The Gala is crucial for funding our initiatives in Mexico, Costa Rica, Paraguay, and soon Honduras. We visit these countries multiple times a year, saving lives and enhancing hundreds more through our training programs.

We’re excited 🤩to share some wonderful news about our recent mission in Paraguay! Our amazing team, which included Dr. Christian Kreutzer (surgeon), Dr. Liliana Ferrin (cardiologist), Dr. Benjamin Chiostri (surgeon), and Dr. Rafael Fraire (intensivist), accomplished an incredible feat by performing 8 catheterizations and 8 open-heart surgeries. ❤❤❤

This marks the kickoff of a fantastic journey 🏃‍♀️with 8 missions planned, all aimed at boosting the surgical skills of local teams. As Dr. Kreutzer mentioned, “Our plan is to balance the cases we handle. We’ll take on half of the more complex surgeries while the other half gives us the chance to observe and guide local surgeons, helping them practice the techniques we've been working on in previous missions.” We can't wait to see the positive impact this project will have! 🌟

Como indicó el Dr. Kreutzer “Nuestro plan es encontrar un mix de casos. Nos encargaremos de realizar la mitad de los casos más complejos mientras observamos y guiamos a los cirujanos locales con la otra mitad de casos, ayudándoles a practicar técnicas que hemos estado trabajando desde misiones previas”. 🌟

In 2019, we took action to support the cardiovascular program at the Hospital Pediátrico Niños de Acosta Ñu in Paraguay. Since then, we have successfully saved the lives of 119 children and significantly impacted the health of hundreds more by training 19 local medical professionals.
Today, we are excited to announce the launch of our most ambitious project yet in Paraguay: the training of 6 pediatric cardiovascular surgeons, 13 cardiologists, 9 intensivists, and over 10 nurses. This groundbreaking initiative will compress five years of surgical and intensive care training into an intensive two-year program designed for the local medical team.
Starting next week, we will be performing open-heart surgeries for 10 children who are in urgent need of life-saving treatment.
We are determined to meet these ambitious goals, and we need your financial support to make it happen.

En 2019, tomamos medidas para apoyar el programa cardiovascular en el Hospital Pediátrico Niños de Acosta Ñu en Paraguay. Desde entonces, hemos logrado salvar la vida de 119 niños y haber tenido un impacto significativo en la salud de cientos más mediante la capacitación de 19 profesionales médicos locales.
Hoy, nos complace anunciar el lanzamiento de nuestro proyecto más ambicioso hasta ahora en Paraguay: la capacitación de 6 cirujanos cardiovasculares pediátricos, 13 cardiólogos, 9 intensivistas y más de 10 enfermeros. Esta iniciativa innovadora comprimirá cinco años de capacitación en cirugía y cuidados intensivistas en un programa intensivo de dos años diseñado para el equipo médico local.
A partir de la próxima semana, realizaremos cirugías a corazón abierto para 10 niños que necesitan urgentemente un tratamiento que puede salvarles la vida.
Estamos decididos a cumplir estos objetivos ambiciosos y necesitamos tu apoyo económico para hacer que esto sea posible.

👨‍⚕👩‍⚕❤This week we recognize the vital role perfusionists play in cardiovascular care. Every day, they contribute to life-saving procedures.

A perfusionist operates the heart-lung machine (CPB), which maintains blood circulation and oxygenation during surgery. They ensure proper blood flow, monitor vital signs like blood pressure and heart rate, and adjust machine settings as needed.

Under supervision, they administer medications and blood products. Perfusionists also manage blood during surgery and may operate ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) to assist patients with lung failure.

👨‍⚕👩‍⚕❤Esta semana celebramos el rol vital que juegan los perfusionistas en el cuidado cardiovascular. Cada día, ellos son parte de procedimientos que salvan vidas.

Un perfusionista opera el equipo de soporte vital que suple las funciones del pulmón y corazón, la cual mantiene la circulación de la sangre y la oxigenación durante la cirugía. Se aseguran de un flujo correcto, monitorea signos vitales como la presión y el ritmo cardiaco, y ajusta la máquina de acuerdo a las necesidades. Bajo supervisión, también administra medicamentos y productos a la sangre.

Los perfusionistas también gestionan la cantidad de sangre en el organismo y ponen en funcionamiento el ECMO (oxigenación por membrana extracorpórea) para asistir pacientes con fallos pulmonares.

Holy Week is a deeply rooted religious celebration throughout much of Latin America. It takes place between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday and is a key part of the Christian liturgical calendar, commemorating the final days of Jesus Christ’s life.

In many Latin American countries, this time of year also offers a pause from daily routines. Official holidays and non-working days are declared, giving families the chance to gather or travel. At the same time, many people uphold traditions such as fasting, abstaining from meat on Fridays, and participating in religious services.

For Surgeons of Hope, this is a special opportunity to connect with the Latin American community and share a message of reflection, forgiveness, and gratitude.

La Semana Santa es una celebración religiosa profundamente arraigada en gran parte de Latinoamérica. Tiene lugar entre el Domingo de Ramos y el Domingo de Pascua, y forma parte esencial del calendario litúrgico cristiano, recordando los últimos días de la vida de Jesucristo.

En muchos países de América Latina, esta época también marca un alto en la rutina diaria. Se establecen feriados oficiales y días no laborables, lo que brinda la oportunidad para que las familias se reúnan o aprovechen para viajar. Al mismo tiempo, muchas personas mantienen vivas las tradiciones: practican el ayuno, se abstienen de comer carne los viernes y asisten a ceremonias religiosas.

At Surgeons of Hope, we draw inspiration from every story of resilience.

Often, we encounter cases that are so complex that when we see our young patients returning home, it reaffirms our belief in miracles. These miracles take the form of dedicated medical personnel, proper care, and the unwavering hope of parents who do everything they can for their children to survive congenital heart disease.

We maintain ongoing communication with the families we assist during our missions. Recently, we had the joy of celebrating the return home of Margely Burgaly. Her mother sent us a heartfelt message.

A menudo encontramos casos tan complejos que cuando vemos que nuestros pequeños pacientes regresan a casa, entendemos el concepto de lo que son los milagros, los cuales vienen en la forma de personal médico, cuidados especiales y la esperanza indestructible de los padres de familia que harían lo que fuera para que sus hijos e hijas sobrevivan a estas enfermedades congénitas del corazón.

Yesterday, we divided into two groups to advance key operations. One group, led by Dr. Eduardo DaCruz, Richard Duron, and Dr. Ksh*tij Mistry, traveled to Mexico to enhance the cardiovascular program at the Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez. They presented an induction plan during multidisciplinary meetings.
Meanwhile, the other group discussed collaboration opportunities with the local team at Hospital María in Honduras, strengthening relationships ahead of our exploratory mission.
At Surgeons of Hope, we aim not only to coordinate surgeries and reduce waiting lists but also to empower local professionals for long-term self-sufficiency. These meetings are vital for engaging with local insights, allowing us to expand our reach where children need us most, thanks to your invaluable support.

Ayer nos dividimos en dos grupos para avanzar nuestras operaciones. Un grupo, liderado por el Doctor Eduardo DaCruz, Richard Duron y el Doctor Ksh*tij Mistry, viajaron a México para desarrollar el programa cardiovascular del Hospital Infantil Federico Gómez. Ahí presentaron un plan de inducción durante varias reuniones multidisciplinarias.

En Surgeons of Hope, no solamente buscamos coordinar misiones para reducir las listas de espera y atender casos complejos, sino también empoderar a los profesionales locales con el propósito de que los programas sean auto sostenibles en el tiempo. Estas reuniones son vitales para conectar con la visión del personal local permitiéndonos expandirnos donde los niños y niñas más nos necesitan. Todo lo anterior es gracias a su apoyo.

Every time we go on missions, we never lose sight of the stories behind each patient—their families, their suffering, and their uncertainty. For Surgeons of Hope, every surgery marks the beginning of a lasting friendship with the parents.
During our recent mission in Costa Rica (February, 2025), we had the opportunity to check on Antonella and her mother. Antonella underwent heart repair surgery in November 2024, and she is doing great.
We thank everyone who takes a moment to watch our stories, raise awareness of this terrible disease, and support us with donations.

Durante nuestra reciente misión en Costa Rica (Febrero, 2025), aprovechamos la oportunidad de visitar a Antonella y a su mamá. A Antonella se le reparó su corazón en Noviembre del 2024 y ahora, ella está bien.

This week marks the end of ❤Heart Month❤, a special time to emphasize the importance of the incredible and powerful pump we have in our chest. We celebrated by concluding a wonderful experience in Costa Rica last week, where we had the opportunity to perform surgeries on five babies and share valuable lessons with local medical teams. These lessons will enable them to save more lives even in our absence.

Esta semana marca el final de la ❤Semana del Corazón❤, una ocasión especial para enfatizar en la importancia que tiene ese increíble y poderoso órgano que tenemos en el pecho. Celebramos esta fecha al concluir nuestra experiencia en Costa Rica la semana pasada, donde tuvimos la oportunidad de operar a cinco bebés e intercambiar lecciones invaluables con los médicos locales. Surgeons of Hope strives to create a world in which every infant and child with a damaged heart has an equal opportunity to receive life-saving surgery.

Due to the complexity of pediatric heart disease, successful treatment depends on advanced medical facilities and highly-trained medical professionals. These are rarely available in developing countries due to a lack of resources.

Surgeons of Hope has developed a sustainable strategy to provide care to children in need of heart surgery.

We approach the need on three key fronts by giving urgently needed care, cultivating skills in local medical teams, and constructing centers of care in developing countries. Several studies on pediatric cardiology in developing countries have shown this to be the most sustainable approach.
