Ted was the first mega-successful man I knew. Circa 1981 ~ In a time before selfies - and when 🦕 roamed the land. He was a mere millionaire at the time, there were only 14 billionaires in the USA at the time. I didn’t have a clue about what that even meant. I was fortunate to have a good friend with Braves tickets a few seats down from Ted, and I went to as many games as I could (this was the braves of Dale Murphy and Bob Horner). I have a lot more to say then I’ll write here, but I often wonder if my attitude about wealth was created in through the observation of this man and his people. I got to know him in a casual setting, he was charismatic, kind and generous- shrewd and focused. He didn’t travel with an entourage, he walked in, sat down, ate a hot dog - just like everyone else. I’ve often told the story about sitting at dinner with my friend and with Ted’s president, Robert Wussler as he negotiated with some fast talking northerners about CNN and their music video that was to compete with MTV. His southern charm won the contest, the northerners had no idea what happened. These are core memories from a time in my life that was so special in many ways. Ted’s keen mind and determination provided entertainment, inspiration, 100’s of thousands of jobs, more than a billion dollars in philanthropy - and helped build Atlanta. RIP Ted.
