Yoga doesn’t happen in seclusion
Yoga happens amidst the chaos of life
While our phones are ringing
And the kids are shouting “where’s my orange shirt?”
And the dog is rolling on our mat
And was that the doorbell?
Yoga helps us stay centered, grounded, and kind
Yoga is a practice that is part of life
Not separate from life
Yoga teaches us to respond to each moment with mindfulness
Which means learning to stay present with our body and breath
And stay present when others need our support
It means listening to our bodies
And listening to the world around us
Yoga isn’t something we do only under perfect conditions
This is the perfect condition
Right here, right now
To make some space, roll out our mat, breath, move, listen, and be
Here in this messy, chaotic world
We can just be
💙

The fact that we’ve made yoga (in the West) a practice that students feel can only be done in certain spaces, under certain circumstances, wearing certain clothes, is an obstacle to practice. If we want yoga to be more inclusive and accessible, we have to fit into people’s real, messy lives.
My latest blog post was inspired by a recent discussion where we talked about the challenges of teaching yoga when there are so many distractions. While having practice guidelines and boundaries are essential, allowing for the inevitable distractions of life can help us to stay grounded, centered and kind.
As teachers, this not only reduces frustration and makes our teaching a little easier, but it also models to our students about “real” yoga life, how yoga helps us deal with the chaos, and how they, too, can maintain a practice amidst the inevitable messiness of our daily lives.

Sometimes we mistake meditation for motionlessness
Meditation is fluid and responsive
It is an active practice of coming back to the present
When we meditate restlessness will come and go
In our bodies, minds, emotions
Let it ebb and flow, like gentle waves, coming and going from the shore
For today, as best you can, observe the waves while you stay grounded on the shore.

Does it get you down when you can’t touch your toes? Do your yoga students worry about their poses not looking like other people’s poses? Here’s something really important to know:
Yoga Tip – Not all bodies move the same
Did you know? There is a difference between how your body is built and moves, and how other people’s bodies are built/move.
In our poses we can have two main types of limitations:
1) Tension: where soft tissue prevents movement. This is something we can address with stretching.
2) Compression: where bones and joints prevent movement. This is not malleable – we can’t address this with more stretching.
This is not about being 'good' at yoga or being more enlightened. This is an issue of structure – literally how you are built.
Some people have joints that allow for more movement. Some people have joints designed for more stability.
This is just one of the reasons that our yoga poses won’t all look the same.
If you can’t quite reach your toes, or your knees are higher in seated poses ask yourself, is this an issue that more stretching will address, or is this the way I’m designed?
Whatever your body structure, you can find safe, comfortable, challenging, and joyful spaces in your yoga poses.
What helps? Letting go of the idea that every body should look the same.

💖 The Yoga of Love: Connection, Compassion, and Self-Care 💖
Yoga isn’t just about movement - it’s about connection. This Valentine’s Day, let’s expand our idea of love beyond romance and celebrate the many ways yoga teaches us to love:
🫶 Self-Love – Every time you step onto your mat, you practice self-care. Yoga teaches us to listen, honor, and nurture ourselves.
💞 Compassion for Others – Through breath and mindfulness, we cultivate patience and empathy - both on and off the mat.
🌍 Universal Connection – Yoga reminds us we’re all interconnected. Whether in a class or in daily life, we move and breathe together.
This Valentine’s Day, show love in all its forms. Roll out your mat, take a deep breath, and embrace love for yourself, your community, and the world. ❤️

Yoga Tip: Finding Stability
If you are looking for more stability, grounding, or confidence in your yoga poses, I have 4 quick tips for you:
1) Stand near a wall or chair. You don’t even have to hold it, just being near a solid object can help
2) Connect with props. If you feel wobbly in Triangle or like you arms are floating in space in a forward fold – add a brick or a strap to ground, steady, and stabilize
3) In balancing poses, start by fixing your gaze. It’s not magic, but a steady gaze can support a steady pose
4) This one is especially for my flexy friends - imagine an opposing movement within the movement you are doing. As you lunge, also put some effort towards also 'un-lunging', pushing the ground away. Within your backbends, imagine a little forward fold as though you are closing the space between your ribs and hips.
I hope that helps!
