Today, April 22nd, is Earth Day! Here are some ideas for helping your loved one contribute to keeping our planet in good shape.
•Create a Compost Pile
Help your loved one make natural plant fertilizer by converting food scraps into a compost pile. This is simple and can be done in your loved one’s yard. Choose a suitable location and start piling yard waste. The pile can be out in the open or confined in wooden slats or another appropriate container. Add coffee grounds, eggshells, fruit and vegetable peelings, and other typical food waste. Remind your loved one to top the food with more yard waste, then turn or mix the conglomeration every two to three weeks. Eventually, the organic matter transforms into great fertilizer for flower and garden plants.
•Make Seedling Gifts
Your loved one can start seedlings by putting soil in the sections of egg cartons, paper cups, or similar containers, then planting one or two seeds in the soil, lightly moistening them, and allowing them to grow. Once the little plants appear, your loved one could tie a ribbon around each cup, attach a set of instructions for growing the plant, and give it to family members or friends as gifts on Earth Day.
•Explore a Farmer’s Market
In addition to using environmentally-friendly practices, farmers often plant crops that add a lot of oxygen to the air we breathe. Buying locally produced food also helps the environment by reducing fuel costs needed to ship harvests in and out of your location. Your loved one might appreciate that all the items found in the local farmers market are fresh from the field.
