Joanne Florentino is a professional caregiver who participated in the Bergen-Passaic Walk to End Alzheimer’s and is now volunteering as a Community Representative, helping create awareness and share valuable resources.

As a caregiver, Joanne understands the importance of making someone’s life a little easier. “Knowing that I am helping someone makes me happy,” Joanne shares. “I love seeing a smile on a client’s face.” She also appreciates hearing her clients’ stories as she helps to improve their lives on the dementia journey.

Joanne’s current client is “happy and proud” that Joanne is volunteering her time with the Alzheimer’s Association. So are we! alz.org/nadam

This Veterans Day, we honor the courage of those who served — and the strength of the families who stand beside them.

Meet Fred B. Stevens Sr., who proudly served in World War II, the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose laughter could light up a room. Fred lived a life of service, not just to his country, but to his family.

In 2008, Fred was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and later died from the disease. “We miss his spark and his ever-smiling, laughing personality that made him a wonderful grandfather,” shared his daughter Susan.

As a way to honor her father, Susan and her family team, Fred’s Freedom Fighters, participate in their local Walk to End Alzheimer's, not just for their family, but for the millions of families facing the disease.

💜 Today, and every day, help us honor Fred and the many other Veterans who have been impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Bernadette DeSantis and her husband Matt lead a Walk to End Alzheimer's team, “The Freakin Finellies,” in honor of Bernadette's mom, who is living with dementia. With the support of her siblings, family and friends, they walk to raise awareness and hope.

Bernadette says, “Our mom has always been our source of love and support, with an unshakable devotion to faith and family. Having to sell her home and the things she loved so she could live safely in assisted living was one of the hardest decisions we’ve faced. We walk not only for her, but with the hope that one day no family will have to give up everything they love to this disease—we walk to end it.”

We are thankful to Bernadette for sharing her family's story to create awareness during Family Caregivers Month. alz.org/nadam

In 2006, New Jersey officially established the first Monday of November as Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Day in the Garden State--an expansion of the existing National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, which takes place throughout November. Today is an ideal day to consider your role in supporting the more than 185,300 New Jerseyans over age 65 who live with Alzheimer's disease.

Consider becoming an advocate to lend your voice to others who seek to support legislation for our neighbors living with dementia and their caregivers. Advocating is easy and you can spend as little or as much time as you want. Ways to help include contacting legislative offices, writing letters to the editor, making phone calls, and participating in state advocacy day and other events. There is a role for everyone who has the passion and training is provided.

Make today--New Jersey Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Day--the day you join the movement and make your impact. Visit alz.org/advocate to learn more and take action or contact Bruce Sisler (bdsisler@alz.org) or Ryan Flanagan (rflanagan@alz.org) to discuss the possibilities. In working together, we will .
