When the Center for Disease Control (CDC) starts talking about ticks and Lyme disease, it indicates how much of a problem this is becoming. Their recpmmendation for the Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) is a good choice, but I'd forget the others, as they can cause more harm than good.

Use EPA-registered repellents to reduce the chance of being bitten by a tick.

Another study has confirmed the futility of long-term antibiotic therapy for people with symptoms attributed to “chronic Lyme disease.” This study involved 252 patients who received 2 weeks of standard antibiotic treatment followed by 12 weeks in which they received either doxycycline, another antibiotic, or a placebo. The three groups demonstrated no significant differences in outcome.

This is a nice article on goals and how not meeting them might work against us in the long-run. Definitely relevant to following any diet or protocol that extends far longer than we might expect or desire. What have you done to keep on going when faced with setbacks?

All too often, an action crisis may lead a person to reassess the cost-benefits of a goal and consider giving it up. New research provides a better understanding of how people respond to action crises.

The researchers found that cases of pediatric Lyme disease increased exponentially over a 10-year period from 2003 to 2013 in western Pennsylvania...From 2003 through 2005, in total, there were five cases of Lyme disease confirmed in children in western Pennsylvania. In 2013, the last year with complete data in the study, there were 285 children diagnosed with Lyme disease.

Doctors found that cases of Lyme disease in children have increased exponentially in western Pennsylvania.

Anyone diagnosed with Lyme Disease who continues to suffer any symptoms after being treated with antibiotics, should consider that their symptoms are caused by the antibiotics they took, and not necessarily due to a continuation of the Lyme Disease. Any continuation of Lyme symptoms that is due to the causative agent, Borrelia burgdorferi, will most likely be due to antibiotic-resistant strains of Borrelia burgdorferi and the associated antibiotic-induced imbalances.

As a chiropractic physician who has spent a great deal of time analyzing and writing about the science behind candida and the role of antibiotics in creating systemic fungal candida, I have become very familiar with the long-term effects of antibiotic use and their ability to induce many conditions and diseases. From cancers to malnutrition to asthma, allergies and life-threatening colitis, the dark side of antibiotic use is seldom discussed openly, and almost never by those in the medical fields who prescribe them. Widely misunderstood as to how they induce the changes they create, antibiotics are typically thought of as the miracle drug that we can't live without. This miracle class of drugs, however, kills more people than AIDS each year and it is the gateway to an untold number of symptoms, conditions, and diseases.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), "Approximately 10 to 20% of patients treated for Lyme disease with a recommended 2–4 week course of antibiotics will have lingering symptoms of fatigue, pain, or joint and muscle aches." According to two other studies by researchers at John Hopkins School of Medicine, "...new-onset patient-reported symptoms increased or plateaued over time. At 6 months, 36% of patients reported new-onset fatigue, 20% widespread pain, and 45% neurocognitive difficulties. However, less than 10% reported greater than “minimal” depression across the entire period." and "Eight (11%) patients met our operationalized definition of PTLDS (Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome), which included self-reported symptoms of fatigue, widespread musculoskeletal pain or cognitive complaints."

The CDC website states that, "The exact cause of PTLDS is not yet known", yet I immediately recognize these symptoms as some of the classically associated symptoms of past antibiotic use. One look at the side effects associated with the most commonly used antibiotics in the treatment of Lyme Disease reveals the same. The 5 main antibiotics of choice for Lyme Disease are Doxycycline, Amoxicillin, Ceftriaxone, Cefotaxime, and Penicillin G. If we compare the long list of antibiotic-induced side effects with the characteristic symptoms of PTLDS, we find the following shared symptoms:

Doxycycline side effects:
Abdominal or stomach tenderness, Anxiety, inflammation of the joints, joint or muscle pain, pain, unusual tiredness or weakness, stomach cramps, stomach pain or tenderness, tightness in the chest, back, leg, or stomach pains, chest pain, discomfort, or burning, severe stomach pain, lower back or side pain.

Amoxicillin:
Back, leg, or stomach pains, chest pain, general feeling of tiredness or weakness, joint or muscle pain, lower back or side pain, muscle stiffness, pain, swelling, or redness in the joints, pain, upper right abdominal pain, anxiety, tightness in the chest.

Ceftriaxone:
Unusual tiredness or weakness, back, leg, or stomach pains, inflammation of the joints, lower back or side pain, muscle aches, chest pain, muscle stiffness, tension, or tightness, pain, tightness in the chest

Cefotaxime:
Mood or mental changes, back, leg, or stomach pains, chest pain, pain, tightness in the chest, agitation, unusual tiredness or weakness, confusion, hallucinations, joint or muscle pain, stiff neck

Cefuroxime:
Lower back or side pain, swelling of the joints, joint or muscle pain, muscle pain or stiffness, muscle spasm of the neck, abdominal or stomach cramps, unusual tiredness or weakness, back, leg, or stomach pains, sleepiness or unusual drowsiness.

Penicillin G:
Aggression or agitation; anxiety; bizarre behavior; confusion; depression; fear of death; chest pain; extreme tiredness; fever; muscle pain; pain/cramps; weakness.
That the exact symptoms of PTLDS and antibiotic use are the same is unmistakable. In spite of this, most people who end up with PTLDS are never given this information. This type of omission is very commonplace in medicine today. It is the hallmark of a profession that has lost its way.
These symptoms can also appear via another common pathway associated with antibiotic use - systemic fungal candida. Fungal candida is known for driving inflammation in the body via several mechanisms that have been related to arthritis, pain syndromes, autoimmune diseases, and cognitive disorders. The common list of 100+ common candida symptoms easily encompasses the PTLDS symptoms.

PTLDS and systemic fungal candida are both tied to previous antibiotic use. The science behind this relationship is well established in mainstream science, but seldom discussed in mainstream medicine. Given that the causation is the same, it can safely be said that the approach to correcting many of the imbalances that cause PTLDS would be the same. The Candida Plan is designed to reverse the effects of antibiotics by correcting the fungal form of candida back to its normal yeast form, detoxifying the body, boosting the correct immune response, and helping to support healthy bacterial flora. All of these help to correct the runaway inflammation in the body that is the basis for all of these symptoms.

Restoring gut health is often the necessary foundation for restoring health in the body. Often with Lyme however, other factors will need to be addressed, as well:
- Toxin burden – physical and psychological
- Restoring Detoxification Pathways
- Organ Dysfunction
- Nutrient Depletion
- Structural Imbalances
- Movement/Exercise

While medical doctors hide their head in the distant past, it will be up to the patients to think their way through science and act to recreate their health. To be healthy is to think. It requires a conscious choice and the repeated application of sound principles.
