Your relationship with food is determined by the environment you learned to eat in.

If your parents were always busy, stressed and had unpredictable moods when they arrived home around meal time
You learned that food became the one thing in your environment you could control.

This then affects how you eat throughout your life into your adult years and why following a plan feels the safest way to get a result.

Each time we go to the supermarket we watch the digits rise on the weekly staples.

It starts to shift your mindset around whether it's sustainable to eat healthy food anymore.

Yet this is what the powers at be want you to think because when you have food insecurity in the population it's easier to control your health.

We have become avoidant as a society when it comes to the words associated with our body weight and for good reason - it's a trigger point for many.

Completely understandable if you have experienced judgement about your body at any stage however it doesn't have to be this way.

Our bodies don't define us yet what I experienced with gaining over 20kg creating my daughter later in life is that it made day to day functioning so much harder.

Tighter muscles, pressure on joints, less able to do day to day activities or play physical games with my son.

It created extra admin to balance my energy. Now that 12 kilos have gone by nourishing my lifestyle post partum my body feels much easier to move and exercise.

This post is not to highlight the need to lose weight it's to bring awareness that carrying extra weight doesn't mean you're not a healthy eater.

I have helped thousands of clients over the last two decades heal their body and nourish their lifestyle.

As a consequence they weight fell off it didn't need to be pushed through unrealistic eating regimes.

This is because holding onto weight is not always reflective of the how much you eat and how you move.

It depends on the state of your nervous system and even if you eat well - weight can still hold on.

Lack of quality sleep, injuries, illness, hormonal oscillation, inflammation, disruptive digestion as well as all types of stress (mental, physical and emotional) cause your body to hold onto the food you eat even if it is healthy.

If you're happy with how you feel in your body - great.

Simply counting calories and exercising more is not going to be the formula for you to create the healthy body you want.

If you have ever wondered why your children bawk at vegetables it's because of their natural earthy taste and bright colours.

A young palate is attuned to mild, neutral sweet & savoury tones.

Anything beyond this scope triggers a sensory response and the palate needs to learn these foods are safe over time.

This is why so many little people under five years old prefer a 'beige diet' because of sensory overload close to meal time.

This can create feelings of guilt that the child is not getting the nutrients it needs to thrive.

So how does this apply if you're an adult?

The environment you grew up in plays a more significant role in your food choice and habits later in life than if you didn't like your veggies as a child.

The perspective of a lack of safety when eating can look like:

✅ Parents arguing around meal time
✅ Siblings being loud at the table
✅ Being forced to eat everything on your plate
✅ Being judged for your body type at any age or stage
✅ Not having a choice in what you got to eat
✅ Plus many others

All of these envoke a nervous system response and determine whether you felt safe to try new food with different tastes and textures.

This is not a post to feel guilt or shame about your experience but to provide perspective that eating is a sensory experience

You have a unique code for your eating based on what makes your nervous system feel safe at the time of consumption.

This has an impact on how your body digests the food you choose regardless of it's nutrition content.

Eating vegetables of course is a great way to get the nutrients your body needs however if your digestive system cant access those nutrients then they get lost as waste.

When you have had life experiences that has rattled your nervous system like loss of a loved one, change in lifestyle, career move, injury, surgery, health condition or other change in circumstances - following a set diet won't work for you.

This is why a holistic approach is essential if you want to eat better, improve your relationship with food and your health permanently.

Last week we went out for lunch and were excited to try the Cauliflower Pie on the menu.

Yet, quickly discovered it was sold out so I decided to come home and create my own version.

Although I eat all food my partner eats plant based for his digestive health.

This recipe was so easy and delicious!

Whether you are on team sweet tooth or think sugar is toxic one thing we cant ignore is that we are programmed to feel safe with sweetness from the moment we arrive earth side.

Whether a baby is breast fed or formula fed as a newborn both taste sweet. The mind starts to get programmed that food & nourishment is safety.

This is such an important piece to acknowledge when you are addressing your relationship with food because if you don't you will end up back at square one no matter what type nutritional changes you make to your eating.

As you age and you experience stress or lifestyle changes your body will compensate through your food choice.

As your body goes into the fight or flight response it automatically looks for safety. Food being the first port of call because it's so readily available.

If you want permanent results in your health, weight loss or energy levels simply 'sticking to a plan' is not going to cut the mustard long term.

The guilt that you feel when you're doing what you can to have a healthy body yet you find the weight just won't budge can be so frustrating

Recently, i experienced this after having my second baby in my 40's

Logically, it made sense carrying extra weight with having 3 hour sleep increments over four weeks, less time to take care of my body and a little human requiring my presence

Yet it still made me feel sluggish not to mention a little bit of imposter syndrome after teaching thousands of women how to get the healthy body they want.

Sleep deprivation.... It can hinder your appetite, your food choice and your health - fast!

It's not exclusive to parenting

So many factors of our lifestyle these days impact the quality of our sleep

It's been a minute since I've been on here because I've been creating something new and in the process learning what it is like to be in my client's shoes 😉👇

What a journey it has been the last 9 months when it comes to weight gain, joint mobility, hormones, appetite and energy levels.

I never imagined creating a new life in my 40's and how different it would feel compared to last time in my early 30's

However it's highlighted some very key pieces of the health jigsaw when it comes to carrying extra weight on a frame that was not designed to carry nearly 90 odd kilos!

What I noticed most was the pain on my joints, the fatigue in my muscles and the oscillating energy levels.

Knowing it was temporary and par for the course to creating a baby after 40 years old - I ate intuitively as well as ensuring I met my daily nutrient targets for pregnancy.

Third trimester in your 40's is like preparing for an iron man competition but adding an extra 20-30 kg to your backpack then wearing it on your front!

It has been a great reminder how the foundation principles of what I have taught the last 17 years still are seamless in the results they provide and work so effectively for getting your health and body back in shape.

A reminder that the missing piece in the weight loss puzzle isn't necessarily what you do or how you think nor does it equate to energy in and energy out.

But.....is how well you hydrate your body through what you eat (as outlined in my first book - 'Wet Your Appetite' published back in 2017).

Two weeks ago today, I gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 1:33am on Friday 30th of January 2026.

Today I have lost all the fluid retention, inflammation and my body has healed faster than it did in my 30's and also have lost 10 kilos slowly each day (not straight after birth).

It wasn't by counting macros or calories, or doing anything extreme or following a meal plan but specifically modifying my meals so my body gets exactly what it needs to thrive nutritionally.

I have my energy back to pre pregnancy levels even with lack of sleep and my pelvic floor is stronger than it was 18 months ago.
