Helen Hadaway Bevers, age 92, of Doraville Georgia, passed away November 29, 2025. She was born April 16, 1933, on Easter Sunday, the daughter of John Henry and Blanche Azalee Griggs Hadaway. Helen lived a life centered on faith, kindness, and quiet strength. She was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her hobbies included playing bridge, painting, playing and listening to music, and following Ga Tech and the Atlanta Braves.

One of her greatest personal inspirations was the poem โ€œJust a Minuteโ€ by Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, which she often recited as a reminder to value each moment: โ€œIโ€™ve only just a minute, only sixty seconds in it. Forced upon me, canโ€™t refuse it, didnโ€™t seek it, didnโ€™t choose it, but itโ€™s up to me to use it. I must suffer if I lose it, give an account if I abuse it, just a tiny little minute, but eternity is in it.โ€

Preceded in death by her husband, Robert Curtis Bevers; her parents; her sister, Joan Hadaway McClung (Charles); and her in-laws, Frank Curtis and Mary Lillian โ€œLilโ€ Wheeler Bevers. She is survived by her brother, Benjamin Earl Hadaway (Jeri); her children, Judge Michael E. Bevers (Eve Fingerett), Stan C. Bevers, Laura Bevers Baker (Mike), and Charles D. Bevers (Kerry); grandchildren Amanda Baker, Jessica Baker, Michelle Baker, Nicholas Baker, Kristin Baker, Robert Bevers (Amyre), Erika Bevers, Alisa Punjani (Nihal), Elliot Bevers, and Katie Bevers; great-grandchild Mei Punjani, with two more expected; along with a large extended family who will forever cherish her memory.

Funeral services are today, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home & Crematory Marietta Chapel with interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Visit with the family at noon prior to the service.

As November comes to a close, I'd like to honor United States Army Captain Donna Curtis Rowe, a Cobb County resident whose legacy of courage and compassion earned her a place in the 2016 Class of the Georgia Military Veteransโ€™ Hall of Fame.

In 1969, Captain Rowe served as Head Emergency Nurse at the 3rd Field Hospital in Vietnam, where she faced unimaginable challenges during the May offensive. Amid the chaos, she saved countless livesโ€”including that of a critically wounded four-month-old baby girl, the sole survivor of a bombed village. Affectionately named โ€œKathleen" by staff, Captain Rowe arranged for her baptism so that she could qualify for care at a local orphanage. Despite the odds, Kathleen survived and was adopted by a Navy Captain. Thirty-four years later, the two were reunited during the filming of The Shadow of the Blade, a documentary that aired on the History and Military Channels.

Captain Roweโ€™s service didnโ€™t end in Vietnam. She went on to support and lead many humanitarian and veterans organizations, including:

- American Red Cross
- American Diabetes Association
- Habitat for Humanity
- Georgia Vietnam Veterans Alliance (Chapter 1)
- Cobb County Republican Womenโ€™s Club
- Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation (current President & CEO)
- Cobb County Advocates for Abused Children

Her charisma, tireless volunteerism, and unwavering dedication to Americaโ€™s veterans is inspiring. Captain Rowe reminds us that heroism isnโ€™t just found on the battlefieldโ€”itโ€™s lived every day in service to others. Thank you Donna.

Iโ€™ve posted a link to her oral history interview in the comments. Itโ€™s a powerful testament to her courage and compassion. I invite you to listen to her incredible story.

The late Mike Boyce, former Chairman of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, was posthumously inducted into the 2025 Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame on November 1st.

Col. Boyce served 30 years in the Marines, both as an aviator and on the ground, with tours in Southeast Asia, Somalia, Kuwait, Iraq, and Oman, as well as assignments at foreign embassies. He earned numerous defense, armed forces, and expeditionary medals, along with special recognition from several foreign governments.

After retiring to Marietta, his service to country continued in civilian life. He became deeply involved in military, civic, and church organizations, and often volunteered as a guest speaker for local businesses, charities, schools, and veterans groups. He was a member of American Legion Post 29, a life member of the Marine Corps League, VFW, Disabled American Veterans, and the Military Officers Association of America. He also helped found the Veterans Ministry at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church and Marine Corps League 1311 in Woodstock.

In 2016, Boyce was elected Chairman of the Cobb County Commission. However, some of his most impactful work came quietly: each week he accompanied disabled veterans to the Atlanta VA Center, ensuring they finally received the medical care and benefits they deserved.

Following his untimely passing in 2024 while attending the Inspired Leadership Initiative at Notre Dame, his alma mater, the universityโ€™s McKenna Center established the annual Michael H. Boyce Award to honor emerging entrepreneurs from adverse circumstances who embody the values that defined his extraordinary life.

Col. Boyceโ€™s induction into the Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to a man whose legacy of service โ€” in uniform, in government, and in community โ€” continues to inspire. Thank you for your service to Cobb County Sir.

Thank you to GMVHOF President & CEO Rick White for this photo and information.

Weโ€™re lucky to live in a town where so many folks care deeply about our history. Prior posts on this page stated that actor and WWII hero, Brigadier General Jimmy Stewart, served as Reserve Commander at Dobbins Air Reserve Base here in Marietta. Itโ€™s a powerful imageโ€”and I can understand why some would want it to be true.

But as someone whoโ€™s spent time in the Dobbins archives this year, I wanted to share a gentle correction. According to Stewartโ€™s official service record, which I obtained directly from the base, thereโ€™s no indication that he ever served at Dobbins. His distinguished Air Force Reserve career included many accomplishments, but a command at Dobbins wasnโ€™t one of them. The wing historian asked me to correct this narrative and I am happy to do so.

Prior posts stating the misinformation surrounding actor (BG) Jimmy Stewart have been deleted.
