Welles received some not-so-great news at his orthopedic appointment last week. His curve has regressed from 21 degrees just 10 months ago, to 38 degrees as of last week.

His doctors believe the great increase in his curve could be the result of a growth spurt. This tells us that several things: that his spine is unable to grow straight on its own, that this will be a lifelong condition for him, and that spine surgery is likely in the long-term future.

As of now, we are consulting with his doctors to see what can be done to keep his curve from regressing further. He is in a “gray area” in terms of his age for doing more Mehta Cast surgeries. He’s not young enough anymore for it to be an absolutely recommended path for treatment, but he’s still young enough that it could be done if necessary.

Our current path forward will most likely be to try 24/7 bracing. Since bracing will not do much to correct the curve, we are hopeful that it will at least help to stop it from getting worse. This will allow us to buy more time (hopefully years) until he needs spine surgery. The older the better in terms of lowered complications and increased surgery options.

As always, we are incredibly grateful for the fantastic, comprehensive care that Welles receives at Seattle Children's. It is clear to us why they are ranked top in the nation for many of their pediatric programs, including orthopedic surgery. Our whole family is well taken care of there, and there is no where else we could ever imagine trusting with Welles’ physical, mental and emotional future 🤍

WHY SUPPORT THIS 5K? 🚒
During the 2014 dedication of the 9/11 memorial museum, President Obama perfectly summarized Welles Remy Crowther’s actions on 9/11: "They didn't know his name. They didn't know where he came from. But they knew their lives had been saved by the man in the red bandana. He called for fire extinguishers to fight back the flames. He tended to the wounded. He led those survivors down the stairs to safety, and carried a woman on his shoulders down 17 flights. Then he went back. Back up all those flights. Then back down again, bringing more wounded to safety. Until that moment when the tower fell."

The annual Red Bandanna 5K at Boston College supports the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust, which the Crowther family uses to fund charity projects in Welles’ name. One of these is the Red Bandana Project, a character-development program for classrooms, sports teams, camps and youth programs.

Welles' 3rd Birthday In Quarantine 🎂 Toddler Birthday In Lockdown!

Welles’ birthday this year was a big milestone, but we had to celebrate it a little differently.

Welles’ sixth cast pics! Yesterday was the big day - Welles had his cast removed and was fitted for a brand new brace! (Brace pics coming soon).

He goes back to the doctor for a follow up at the end of September to see if his curve progresses at all while out of a cast. This means he gets the whole summer cast-free! He has to wear the brace for 16 hours a day, which will mostly be overnight and leaves plenty of time for fun summer activities!

Welles’ sixth Mehta Cast Surgery went well yesterday!

After removing his fifth cast on Wednesday they took an x-ray, which showed that he is now down to a 28 degree curve with almost no rotation. That means with just this last cast he has improved by seven degrees!

His doctor is confident that we will continue to see improvement with this kind of progress. The day after Welles’ birthday next month he will have his cast removed and his new brace fitted. The brace (which will be decorated with cars and trucks, of course) will be worn 16 hours a day until his next appointment in September.

Side note: Welles had to have a COVID-19 test done before surgery. It was — ahem — challenging to say the least. We had to hold him down as a long q-tip was stuck deep into his nose for ten seconds. Not fun and a little traumatizing, but obviously necessary to keep him and the hospital staff safe. Wear your masks, people 😷

Welles will be having his cast removed on Wednesday! His doctors have decided that the plan will be to take him out of his current cast for two days and then undergo surgery for another cast (his 6th). Unlike his other casts, this one they only plan to leave on for one month. During surgery they are going to mold him for a brace, and once it is ready (which takes about a month) he will go back to have his cast removed and his new brace fitted.

Life with a brace is going to have its challenges, but we are looking forward to the flexibility it will give Welles to really enjoy the summer. He will only need to wear it for 14 hours a day, which means plenty of time for real baths, (socially distant) beach and ocean visits, swimming, and tons of water play! It will be nice for us to enjoy the summer without worrying about him becoming overheated.

In the fall, Welles will return to the doctor to see how he progresses in a brace versus a cast. It will be at that point they will decide whether or not to continue bracing or go back to more casting.

UPDATE! As many of you know, Welles had his 5th mehta cast surgery recently. A short time after his surgery we got a call from the hospital letting us know that during his visit he was exposed to someone who gave him care that had since tested positive for COVID-19. Even though we live so close to the epicenter of the US outbreak, and obviously knew we could be exposed to it in a hospital, it was still a shock to hear. We were advised to self-quarantine for 14 days, which has since ended!

Thankfully, we were fully stocked on food, diapers, wipes and other staples (we started keeping extras on hand after the earthquakes last summer). We didn’t (and still haven’t) experienced any symptoms, and Welles was able to get used to his new cast while we all isolated at home 😊

Welles’ surgery went very well today. He recovered well, although he was a little groggy and gassy for the rest of the day.

After taking a closer look at Welles’ x-ray, his doctor has come up with a modified plan going forward. In three months, Welles might have one more cast put on for one month while they mold a brace for him (which he will wear until at least the fall when they do another x-ray). Or, Welles will spend at least three months with no cast and no brace.

Due to the fact that Seattle’s COVID-19 outbreak may put a significant strain on medical resources, the hospital may close down within the next few months. His doctor said the hospital is already preparing for this just in case it happens. This means that in the event that the hospital is closed, they won’t do another cast or brace on Welles and he will go cast-free for at least the summer. If the hospital remains open, they will proceed with the plan for one month in a new cast followed by a brace.

His doctor feels confident in this plan because of all the great improvements Welles has made. He told us that his spine has virtually no rotation anymore, which is great news because now we can just focus on correcting the curve. He’s hopeful that this is a good sign that his spine is learning to grow up and straight on its own, and that he’s building more core strength.
