Your energy is your most precious resource.

Not your time. Not your money. Your energy.

And most of us have been pouring it out without intention — reacting, rushing, giving from depletion rather than fullness.

Grace says: I don’t have to be perfect to be present.
Intention says: I choose how I show up in this moment.

Together, they transform ordinary moments into something sacred.

A meal with someone you love. A morning before the house wakes up. A single slow breath before you respond instead of react.

That’s not a spiritual concept. That’s a practice.

I spent 35 years in the classroom and nobody told me what stress was actually doing to my body. And here's what I know now, and I wish that someone had told me in my first weeks of teaching.

When you're triggered, your body releases stress hormones that can take up to 24 hours to fully clear a woman's system.

Twenty-four hours.

That's why you arrive home exhausted on days that weren't even hard. That's why summer never feels long enough to recover. That's why you wake up at 2:00 AM rehashing a conversation from last Tuesday.

Your body isn't failing you.
It's doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Nobody warns you about the September that doesn't come. For 35 years, August meant new pencils, fresh bulletin boards, and a classroom full of children waiting to be met.

And then one year, it just didn't.

I will not pretend that that transition was graceful.
I grieved it.

The September resets, the photo albums made by students and parents, the identity I had built over three and a half decades of showing up for other people's children.

I had no idea now much about me, how much of me was wrapped up in that role until it was no longer there.

What I have learned on the other side is this.
You are not lost.
You are in transition.

There is a profound, important difference between the two. Lost means no direction, no sense of self. Transition means you know exactly who you've been, and you're in a sacred, disorienting, quietly beautiful process of discovering who you are becoming.

The skills that made you extraordinary as a teacher, they didn't stay in the classroom.

They were never the classroom's to begin with.
They were ALWAYS yours.

Here’s a tool I learned from yoga instructor Lora Williams — and it has stayed with me ever since.

At the end of every class, she would say:

“We do all that work just so we can be still.”

We stretch and lengthen and move — so the inner being can rest.

Today’s tool is the simplest one I’ll share this month:

Exhale completely before you inhale.

Most of us breathe backwards under stress — we inhale first, chest rising, body bracing.

Try this instead: exhale fully, pulling your belly button gently toward your spine. Then breathe in slowly, feeling your ribs expand wide.

That single reversal — exhale first — activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Your body’s built-in off switch for cortisol.

Try it three times right now. 🌿

Stop what you're doing and do this with me. Relax your lower abs, not dramatically, just a little letting go, like you've been holding your breath and you finally remembered you're allowed to exhale.

Did you feel that? Your jaw may have softened.

Your shoulders may have slightly dropped.
Your breath may have deepened all on its own.

Here's why that just happened. When our lower abs are tight, that braced, held feeling is what so many of us are carrying all day long, we're sending a continuous signal to the brain. This signal says, "Danger is present,"
and the brain believes it every.single.time.

Releasing that tension sends the opposite signal, "I am safe.
I can be present.
I can think clearly."

This is one of the tools that I use in the ten-second window, that window you have to stop, prevent stress hormones before they start.
