UofL Health Brown Cancer Center became the first of just three medical facilities in the USA to offer FDA approved solid tumor testing in house, called the Illumina TruSight Oncology Comprehensive. The detail provided in the test allows doctors to create deeply targeted and personalized therapy plans such as immunotherapies. In the past eight months, about 130 patients have benefited from the test, often taking their wait times from 4-6 weeks to just about 2-3 weeks. Kentucky is one of the most at-risk states for cancer, with 30,240 new cases in 2025 alone. Congratulations to Dr. Al-Kawaaz and the NGS lab, this is a massive win for the community!

In the summer of 2025, the University of Louisville Brown Cancer Center became one of the first in the US to offer FDA approved solid tumor testing.

William (Bill) Lockwood, PhD, MD, passed way in January 2026 in Belize, the country in which he retired. A graduate of University of Louisville School of Medicine, Dr. Lockwood was one of those rare physicians who practiced both anatomic and clinical pathology with excellence. He was known best for his role as the former Medical Director of our local American Red Cross (ARC) Region, and was an invaluable transfusion medicine resource to the community. Dr. Lockwood was a respected physician of the ARC and worked on significant medical projects at their national headquarters. He was heavily into research and published many papers. He later worked as Medical Director of Norton Hospital’s Transfusion and Coagulation Services and was the beloved Medical Director of the Transfusion Service at UofL Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Towards the end of his career, he was recognized by the AABB for a lifetime of excellence in transfusion medicine.

He was not only an expert in the field, but he also had “old time” work ethics. No one had higher expectations for Dr. Lockwood than he had for himself. He was always on time, always prepared and professional. He was the first person in management in the office each morning and the last one out. If we were forced to describe him in one word, it would be “exact.” Exact refers to being perfectly correct, accurate, and having zero deviation from a standard or true value. He was “exact” in everything he did. He expected it from his students, and they learned to expect it from themselves.

He was a lifelong mentor and friend, and touched the hearts of all who knew him.

Rest in peace, Bill, and know that so many patients benefited from the teaching you provided to medical students, residents, fellows and medical technologists in our community!

We want to take a moment to honor our friend, Dr. Mostafa Fraig, who sadly passed away on February 5, 2021. Dr. Fraig joined the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in July 2010 as the William M. Christopherson Professor and Director of Anatomic Pathology, as well as Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He came to us from the John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland where he was Director of Cytopathology and Associate Director of Surgical Pathology. We still miss having Dr. Fraig around but his memory lives on in everyone who was blessed to know him.
