Boost your Fertility with TCM

Who will be appropriate candidates for acupuncture and herbal medicine?

Women with unexplained infertility or hormonal imbalances, such as menstrual irregularities, PMS, high FSH level, absence of ovulation, difficult implantation, and frequent miscarriage, would be encouraged to seek relief from Acupuncture and Chinese medicine. The most frequent cause of unexplained infertility or hormonal imbalance is energy stagnation, which affects blood flow in the pelvic area. Many years of emotional stress, depression, frustration, overwork, and improper diet and lifestyle often play a major role in energy congestion.

Acupuncture can also help Men with Infertility Problems

Men continually produce new s***m. It takes approximately 72-90 days to create and mature s***m. This is when acupuncture can be used to provide the optimum conditions for healthy s***m to be produced.

Research has suggested that acupuncture statistically improves s***m quality and fertility rates in men with defective s***m motility and morphology (as diagnosed microscopically). Possible mechanism that may account for its effectiveness is that acupuncture may work as an anti-inflammatory aid by releasing immunomodulation (i.e. immune altering) factors affecting the reproductive system. It is known that a number of identifiable medical conditions are caused by disorders brought about by the immune system attacking the body’s own tissues including s***m.

Introduction to TCM Fertility Treatment @ Joy TCM Clinic

We recognize that every person and couple having difficulty conceiving need individualized treatment because no two persons present with the exact same issues. With that customized approach, acupuncture treatment can be an effective means to aid conception in many cases of infertility – endometriosis, ovulation problems, male factor, poor ovarian reserve, poor egg quality, chronic miscarriage, irregular periods.

For the best results, most couples would have greater success trying acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine before attempting more technically advanced methods such as IVF. However, in certain cases of infertility, especially women with disruptions affecting both fallopian tubes, Assisted Reproductive Techniques such as IVF should be the primary treatment with support from acupuncture. In general, women are recommended to implement acupuncture for at least 3-6 months before considering more high risk, toxic, invasive, and expensive techniques such as medications, IUI, and IVF.

Women often feel the need to do as much as medically possible as soon as possible, often due to a sense of running out of time from aging. However, the majority of women will respond to acupuncture without the need of powerful drugs, often resulting in an easier pregnancy and healthier baby.

In cases of male factor infertility, acupuncture can improve s***m quality which will dramatically improve your chance of a natural pregnancy or increasing your success rate with IVF by improving the quality of the embryo and decreasing the chances of a miscarriage.

We believe the reason for higher success rate in our clinic with couples who use only acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine is because these gentle techniques encourage the body to do what it wants to do naturally – that is, to conceive. Balancing the body with emphasis on the hormonal system will allow conception in time.
In many women, the repeated use of hormonal medications to hyper stimulate the ovaries can overly stress the body so that fertilization doesn’t occur because the eggs didn’t have enough time to develop fully or allow the uterine lining to become rich enough in nutrients to allow implantation of the fertilized egg.

However, if you are scheduled to start with assisted reproduction sooner, acupuncture will help improve your chances by decreasing your body’s physiological reaction to stress, reducing the side effects of medications, and supporting your uterus for implantation. In these cases, using acupuncture garners more successful results than assisted reproduction technique alone.

How acupuncture & herbs can help throughout the IVF cycle

Before (3 months prior to cycle) – in women, improve egg quality and regulate hormones; in men, improve semen quality & quantity.

During – increase the number of follicles & improve the quality of the uterine environment by relaxing uterine muscles & thickening uterine lining.

After (once pregnant) – prevent miscarriages and minimize symptoms common in the first trimester.

How Chinese medicine can help to improve the success rate

-Improve the function of the ovaries to produce better quality eggs
Regulate the hormones to produce a larger number of follicles
-Increase blood flow to the uterus and increase the thickness of the uterine lining
-Relaxes the patient to relieve stress related dysfunction
-Decrease chances of miscarriage by relaxing the uterus
-Strengthens immune system

Male factor

-Invigorate the s***m, raising the s***m count and mobility
-Improved s***m quality

What to expect during your first visit

During the first visit, Physician Joy Poh takes a detailed medical history related to infertility; review the details of your menstrual cycle and blood flow during menstruation; gain a thorough understanding of your goals; and examine your whole system. During this process, she often discovers many possible factors that can influence both conception and pregnancy problems that have not yet shown up as a symptom or subtle signs of imbalance that indicate future illness. She puts all these composites together and provides you with a clear personalized assessment and optimal treatment plan.

Having many years of experience in the treatment of women’s health issues, Physician Joy Poh fully recognizes the relationship between a variety of stressful emotions and infertility. She truly believes that negative emotions play a major role in causing hormonal imbalances and other related problems associated with female reproduction, including absent of ovulation, menstrual irregularities, PMS and endometriosis. Indeed, one of the main focuses of her treatment of infertility is to balance the mind and body, help her patients reclaim their lives and spirits and lead them to improve their overall health and well-being.

Her goal is to offer new hope through natural, holistic fertility TCM treatment, bringing experience and compassion for your quest to conceive and helping your dream to become a reality.

Managing Acid Reflux: A TCM Guide for this Chinese New Year

If you find yourself experiencing heartburn, chest discomfort, bloating, or a sour taste in your mouth after festive meals, you are not alone. Searches for “acid reflux after eating”, “heartburn at night”, and “natural remedies for acid reflux” rise sharply during festive period such as Chinese New Year. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a clear explanation for why symptoms worsen during the festive period—and how to manage it naturally.

What Is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, causing burning, discomfort, or a feeling of food “stuck” in the throat. Western medicine attributes it to a weakened lower oesophageal sphincter (LES), but TCM provides a deeper view of the internal imbalances involved.

Why Festive Food Triggers Acid Reflux

The most common triggers include:
-Large portions
-Greasy, fried, or creamy foods
-Chocolates, pastries, and desserts
-Spicy foods
-Alcohol, especially wine and champagne
-Caffeinated drinks
-Late-night suppers

In TCM terms, these foods create Stomach Heat, Dampness, and Qi rebellion (improper flow of energy upward), all of which contribute to acid reflux.

Acid Reflux from a TCM Perspective

TCM considers acid reflux to be a sign of disharmony within the digestive system. The main patterns include:

1. Stomach Heat
Occurs when overeating, alcohol, and spicy foods cause the stomach to become overheated. Common signs:
Burning pain
Thirst
Bad breath
Constant hunger

2. Liver Qi Stagnation
Stress, emotional tension, and rushing between festive events block the smooth flow of Qi. This pushes stomach acid upward. Common signs:
Bloating
Belching
Chest tightness
Irritability

3. Spleen Qi Deficiency
Cold foods, irregular meals, and overeating weaken digestion. Common signs:
Heaviness
Fatigue after eating
Loose stools
Water retention

4. Damp-Heat
A combination of greasy foods and alcohol creates Damp-Heat, a major common pattern. Common signs:
Nausea
Sour taste in mouth
Thick tongue coating
Bloating and gassiness

Why Acid Reflux Gets Worse in Chinese New Year

1. Heavier meals
Buffets, potlucks, and festive dinners strain the digestive system.
2. Late-night eating
Eating after 9 pm slows digestion and increases reflux risk.
3. More alcohol
Alcohol irritates the stomach lining and relaxes the LES, making reflux more likely.
4. Stress and rushing
Chinese New Year is busy—office deadlines, gatherings, year-end planning. Stress disrupts the Liver and affects stomach harmony.
5. Lack of sleep
Late nights weaken Qi, slowing digestion.

How TCM Helps Relieve Acid Reflux

TCM treatment aims to restore harmony in the digestive system and prevent long-term recurrence.

1. Acupuncture
Supports smooth Qi flow, reduces bloating, relieves tension, and cools Stomach Heat. Common points include those regulating the Stomach, Liver, and Spleen.

2. Herbal Medicine

Depending on the underlying pattern, herbs may:
Clear Stomach Heat
Regulate Liver Qi
Strengthen Spleen Qi
Transform Dampness

Common herbs include:
Ban Xia
Chen Pi
Huang Lian
Hou Po
Mai Ya
Herbal formulas are always customised by a licensed TCM physician.

3. Diet and Lifestyle Guidance

TCM places strong emphasis on prevention, especially during festive seasons.

Practical Tips to Control Acid Reflux This Festive Season
-Eat smaller portions
-Avoid overeating, especially at buffets. Take smaller plates.
-Avoid lying down after meals
Leave at least 3 hours between dinner and sleep.
-Choose warm foods
Warm soups, steamed dishes, and cooked vegetables support digestion.
-Limit alcohol
If drinking, pair with food and sip slowly.
-Reduce cold drinks
Cold beverages weaken digestion and slow stomach movement.
-Add ginger or warm water
Helps strengthen Spleen Qi and reduces bloating.
-Manage stress
Deep breathing, light stretching, and regular rest prevent Liver Qi stagnation.

When to Seek Medical or TCM Attention

If you frequently have:
Persistent burning chest pain
Chronic sour taste in the mouth
Night-time discomfort
Difficulty swallowing
A feeling of a lump in the throat

You may need a TCM consultation to determine the root imbalance and prevent chronic gastritis or GERD.

Final Thoughts

Festive gatherings should be enjoyable, not uncomfortable. By understanding acid reflux through a TCM lens and adjusting your eating habits this Chinese New Year, you can prevent flare-ups and protect your digestion. With acupuncture, herbal support, and conscious food choices, your body can stay balanced through this festive season!

Overcoming Menstrual Challenges with Acupuncture for Menstrual Irregularities (Supporting teenager girls' menstrual health)

Navigating puberty and hormonal changes can be a challenging time for any teenager, especially young girls. From irregular periods to mood swings, the journey through adolescence can be tumultuous. However, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), including acupuncture, offers a holistic approach to supporting teen girls through this transformative phase of life.

Understanding the Teenage Menstrual Cycle:

The menstrual cycle is a complex interplay of hormones, emotions, and physical changes. For many teenagers, irregular periods, painful cramps, and mood swings are common occurrences. TCM views menstruation as a reflection of the body’s balance of Qi (energy) and blood flow. When this balance is disrupted, symptoms such as menstrual irregularities and discomfort can arise.

How Acupuncture Can Help:

For teenage girls experiencing menstrual issues, acupuncture can offer several benefits:

1. Regulating Menstrual Cycles
Acupuncture can help regulate hormonal imbalances that contribute to irregular periods. By targeting specific acupuncture points related to reproductive health, acupuncture sessions can promote regularity in the menstrual cycle.

2. Alleviating Menstrual Pain
Many teenage girls experience painful cramps during their periods. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce menstrual pain by promoting the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. By targeting acupuncture points associated with pain relief, acupuncture treatments can provide significant relief from menstrual discomfort.

3. Balancing Hormones
Hormonal fluctuations during puberty can lead to mood swings, irritability, and other emotional symptoms. Acupuncture can help balance hormone levels by regulating the endocrine system. This can result in improved mood stability and emotional well-being for teenage girls.

4. Supporting Emotional Health
In TCM, emotional health is closely linked to physical well-being. Acupuncture treatments not only address physical symptoms but also support emotional balance. By promoting relaxation and reducing stress, acupuncture can help teenage girls navigate the emotional ups and downs of puberty more effectively.

Additional TCM Approaches

In addition to acupuncture, TCM offers various modalities that can support teenage girls through puberty and hormonal changes:

1. Herbal Medicine
Herbal remedies prescribed by TCM practitioners can complement acupuncture treatments. Herbs such as d**g quai, chaste tree berry, and ginger are commonly used to regulate menstrual cycles and alleviate menstrual symptoms.

2. Dietary Therapy
Diet plays a crucial role in TCM, and certain foods are believed to support reproductive health and hormonal balance. A TCM practitioner can provide dietary recommendations tailored to the specific needs of teenage girls, helping them maintain optimal health during puberty.

3. Lifestyle Modifications
TCM emphasises the importance of lifestyle factors such as exercise, sleep, and stress management in maintaining overall health. Teenage girls can benefit from incorporating TCM principles into their daily routines to support their physical and emotional well-being.

Puberty and hormonal changes can present challenges for teenage girls, but with the support of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, they can navigate this phase of life more smoothly. By addressing the root causes of menstrual issues and promoting holistic balance, TCM offers a natural and effective approach to supporting teenage girls through their journey to womanhood.

How TCM Fertility Supports Natural Pregnancy Preparation

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long been a pillar of Asian wellness, and in recent years, it’s gaining traction among Singapore’s health-conscious millennials and Gen-Z. Faced with rising fertility challenges and demanding lifestyles, more Singaporean couples are exploring TCM as a complement—or even an alternative—to conventional fertility medicine.

Key Takeaways

Joy TCM Clinic in Singapore provides a holistic approach to natural conception by balancing hormones, improving reproductive organ health, and regulating menstrual cycles.

Choosing the best TCM for fertility in Singapore ensures personalised treatment plans, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, and lifestyle guidance tailored to individual needs.

TCM for fertility in Singapore not only supports conception but also enhances overall wellness, reduces stress, and strengthens energy and immune function for a healthier pregnancy journey.

TCM vs Western Fertility Treatments: What’s the Difference?

The contrast between TCM and conventional fertility care is stark.
Western medicine often targets specific problems – hormones, eggs and s***m – with high-tech interventions like IVF, hormone injections or IUI. TCM, by contrast, takes a holistic approach. It doesn’t simply treat “infertility” as an isolated problem, but aims to restore overall balance in the body (for example, harmonising Qi, blood and hormones), which in turn supports reproductive health.

A good way to see the difference is that Western fertility drugs focus on ovulation induction or embryo implantation, whereas a TCM practitioner will ask about your whole medical history,
emotional state, diet, sleep, and menstrual cycle quality. Indeed, research suggests that assessing and improving the quality of a woman’s menstrual cycle is fundamental to TCM infertility therapy. In other words, instead of just “kick-starting” an egg with drugs, TCM may prescribe herbs to strengthen blood flow or acupuncture to relax the patient, aiming to make the body more receptive to pregnancy. Many couples appreciate this broader philosophy: if IVF or medication feels invasive or stressful, TCM offers a gentler alternative.

Understanding TCM’s Approach to Fertility

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic system of healthcare that emphasizes balance, harmony, and the free flow of the body’s vital energy, or Qi. Fertility challenges in women and men are often viewed as a sign of imbalance in these energies. By addressing root causes rather than just symptoms, TCM provides a natural approach to enhancing reproductive health.

What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic healthcare system that has been practiced for thousands of years. It views the body as an interconnected system, where physical, emotional, and environmental factors all influence overall health. Moreover, TCM focuses on the following:

-Focuses on balance of Yin & Yang for optimal health.
-Maintains smooth flow of Qi throughout the body.
-Treats the body as a holistic system, rather than isolated symptoms.

How TCM Views Fertility and Reproductive Health
In TCM, fertility is closely linked to the health of key organs and energy systems:

Kidney Energy:
Foundation of reproductive health
Supports egg quality, s***m vitality, and hormonal balance

Spleen Energy:
Aids nutrient absorption and blood production
Supports menstrual health and preparation for pregnancy

Blood Circulation & Menstrual Health:
Ensures the uterus and ovaries are nourished
Promotes implantation and reduces risk of miscarriage

Key Benefits of choosing TCM treatments for enhancing your fertility:
-Improves hormonal balance naturally
-Enhances reproductive organ health
-Supports menstrual regularity and ovulation
-Reduces stress and improves overall wellness
-Personalised treatments based on individual constitution

Choosing the best TCM for fertility in Singapore or a trusted fertility clinic ensures tailored therapy that enhances chances of natural conception while supporting overall health.

Key TCM Treatments for Pregnancy Preparation
TCM offers several gentle yet effective therapies that work together to support fertility:
1. Acupuncture
Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to regulate qi flow, which is crucial for TCM fertility. It improves blood circulation to the uterus and ovaries, balances hormone levels, and reduces stress — all of which are essential for conception.

2. Herbal Medicine
Customised Chinese herbal formulas are used to strengthen the body, nourish the blood, and regulate ovulation. These herbs help address underlying issues like irregular periods or hormonal imbalances, which are common in infertility.

3. Moxibustion and Cupping
These therapies are sometimes added to improve blood flow and ease muscle tension. Moxibustion involves burning a herb called mugwort near specific acupoints, while cupping uses suction to relieve stagnation.

Together, these treatments help restore balance and support natural fertility in a safe and non-invasive way.

How TCM Supports Natural Pregnancy
A research published in the National Library of Medicine stated that, “Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has significant advantages in treating gynaecological disorders,” including infertility. TCM offers a holistic approach to natural pregnancy by addressing the root causes of fertility challenges and supporting overall reproductive health. In Singapore, many couples turn to TCM therapies to enhance fertility naturally, complementing conventional treatments.

Preparing the Body for Conception
TCM focuses on creating the optimal physical environment for conception:

Strengthening the Kidney and Spleen energy to support reproductive function

Improving blood circulation to the uterus and ovaries
-Nourishing the body with fertility-friendly herbs and diet
-Balancing energy and Qi to prepare for conception
-Balancing Hormones and Improving Ovulation
-Hormonal imbalances can affect ovulation and menstrual cycles.

TCM addresses these issues naturally:
-Promotes regular ovulation cycles

When to Start TCM for Pregnancy Preparation

One of the most common questions is: “When should I start TCM treatment at a TCM fertility clinic in Singapore if I want to get pregnant?”

Ideally, it is best to begin 3 to 6 months before trying to conceive. This allows the body time to regulate the menstrual cycle, nourish the uterus, and replenish energy reserves. Starting early at a TCM fertility clinic can also help improve the quality of eggs and overall health.

Even if you’re already trying or undergoing Western treatments, it’s not too late to benefit from TCM support.
