Let’s talk about it.
As once again takes the main stage in the political discourse it’s important that we start to talk more facts and less quippy sound bites.

Addiction is complex. Recovery doesn’t have to be.

Let’s get into it.

I promise you that bus is packed tight.

When you are struggling it can feel like you are the only one. You look around at everyone else and they seem to have it all figured out.

The truth is…

You aren’t.
And they don’t.

If you were the only one then the self help industry wouldn’t be worth over $11 BILLION.

If you were the only one depression wouldn’t be the leading cause of disability worldwide (prior to C19!!)

The reality is that some of the people have some of the things figured out, some of the time.

Realizing that we are all on the same bus can make space for empathy and self-compassion.

Seeing ourselves as human, and sharing in the common humanity of living an imperfect, challenging life, can be the first step to pulling the stop cord.

What if we were allowed to be imperfect without having to be broken?

What if I am not a bad person if I eat fast food (without the need to qualify it with justifications?)

What if we could acknowledge and accept that the system put in place long before us is also flawed and those flaws impact is all in fundamental and disproportionate ways?

What if all of us simultaneously worked to support each other healing, while also working to change the system for the betterment of us all.

What if?

What does it mean to be Psychologically Flourishing?

These components identified by psychologists Carol Ryff and Corey Keyes provide an incredible framework to understand Flourishing and its counterpart Languishing.

🪣If these buckets are all full we are more likely to be flourishing.

🪣 If the majority of our buckets are empty we are likely to find ourselves languishing.

Not only can you identify how you are feeling, but you can also start to find ways to intentionally focus on filling your buckets. Or perhaps where you’ve been focusing too much - because one bucket cannot compensate for another.

I’ll provide some definitions of each here and encourage you to reflect on what they mean for you.

What bucket do you overfill?
What bucket do you neglect?

Learning how to fill your unique buckets is what sustainable wellbeing is all about!!

I originally posted this last year - but because I talked about languishing again just the other day I thought I would post it again to re-open the conversation.

I’ll get more detailed if there is an interest! 🤓🤓🤓

Original caption posted in 2021:

🙅🏻‍♀️What we were doing ‘before’ wasn’t working.

If all of those things that we did in the name of ‘wellness’ before actually worked…

Then why are so many of us languishing?

Why do so many us us feel:

😕 disconnected
🥱 unmotivated
😵‍💫 disillusioned

?

Because while behaviours like yoga, travel, achievements, and connecting with friends can be enough to keep us from illness they aren’t enough for sustainable wellness.

Sustainable Wellness is bolstered by healthy behaviours - I’m not suggesting you stop, especially if you enjoy them!

But Sustainable Wellness comes from a much deeper place.

It comes from deep within the garden of our minds 🧠🌱

Learning to cultivate wellness allows us to develop skills we can use to navigate growth, change, and uncertainty with confidence and grace.

So that we can enjoy our yoga, travel, accomplishments, and time with friends much much more.

Do you want to cultivate Sustainable Wellness in 2022?

I’m so tired of marketing in the wellbeing arena. The general advice is to create an avatar of someone’s life by highlighting everything that could possibly be wrong.

It’s the modern day version of the most depressing ‘before’ picture ever.

Not only do they do this but then they follow it up with the most perfect version of someone’s life….and all you have to do is follow their ‘unique’ program.

Rest assured you will be pitched a webinar in which you will learn nothing because it wasn’t designed to teach it was designed to sell.

It was designed to be a longer form version of making you feel like crap about your life and hook you into believing whatever is being sold is the only way to stop being crap.

Then you are hit with an outrageous price tag and made to feel like you are neglecting yourself if you DON’T buy in.

Once you are in you generally find a watered down version of an old psychological theory that has been academically debunked for years - repackaged with fun marketing lingo and cult like Facebook groups.

🤢🤢🤢🤢

I’m so frogging over it.

If you want to focus on growth in your life, if you feel stuck and like you want a change? That’s great!! That’s part of being human.

There doesn’t have to be something wrong with you.

In fact it could be a sign that there is something very right with you.

And if someone tries to make you feel otherwise…..RUN.

I ponder this a lot.

I’m tired of constantly trying to be at my best. I don’t have the capacity to do everything I need to do at the level of ‘best’.

Right now I am focused on my achievable betters.

One of the biggest frustrations that people talk to me about is feeling stuck.

Does any of this sound familiar?

You eat healthy (mostly) but still feel a lack of energy.

You have healthy interests and activities but you feel like you are just going through the motions.

You can’t point to anything being WRONG. You just don’t feel RIGHT.

You end up just feeling frustrated and wondering why you are bothering if it’s not giving you the results you need.

Why is this? And more importantly… how do you overcome it?

Lack of Alignment - if the changes you make aren’t in line with your values, your dreams, your strengths, your resources, you won’t feel like you’re progressing.

The trouble is that we often dive quickly into changes, we push forward despite this misalignment and we end up knee deep in the same 💩

As we work together to bring them back into alignment the changes get more internally motivating and the results drive themselves.

Realignment doesn’t have to be hard in fact… it can be fun and affirming!!

There are a lot of other things I ‘should’ be doing.

There is a room to be cleaned. Laundry to be put away. Dishes waiting.

I haven’t made as much progress as I want towards some lofty goals.

But she has a sniffy nose and wants to sit on me. She wants my arm around her and to watch Daniel Tigers neighbourhood.

So all those things I should be doing….they aren’t getting done. I’m privileged enough to make the choice to be her cuddle couch today.

It’s not a choice I’ll make everyday. And it’s not a choice I’ll always be in a position to make.

As a mom it’s hard not to find guilt lurking behind every choice. But knowing that allows us to make the choice that is right for us in that moment. Guilt comes and guilt goes.

Where capability and people pleasing meet - burnout and overwhelm are sure to follow.

I have been so guilty of this - and honestly I am STILL guilty of this.

I know that I am capable of doing a great number of things. Hyperfixation and an ability to catch on quick means that YouTube and I can collaborated to complete projects that I agreed to before knowing how to complete it.

While this has lead me great places and helped me to accomplish more than I could have ever imagined possible - it has also left me overwhelmed and exhausted.

My relationships became strained because I was trying to be everything for everyone. In my effort to please the people around me - I forgot to put myself on the list.

It wasn’t until I started saying no. Delegating. Setting boundaries. And forcing myself to do what I was internally motivated to do, that everything shifted for me.

My people pleasing came from a desire to fit in. When I started focusing on what I knew I could do well without having to learn a whole new skill…I started to find out where I belonged.

And it is so much better to belong.

I won’t lie and say that I am consistently good at this. I still find myself saying yes when I should say no.

But I’m practicing and I am getting better.

What about you? Are you capable and overwhelmed?

🌱 I want to live in a world where individuals and communities are thriving.

🗑 🔥 Looking around at the state of things today it can be easy to think that a world of thriving is an impossible dream.

☁️ maybe - but I’ve seen impossible dreams become reality over and over again.

And I’m not just talking about the Nelson Mandela type of impossible dream (though that has happened too..)

I’m talking about:

🥰 the perfectionist who FINALLY felt like they were ENOUGH

🥸 the Imposter who realized they did actually belong

☺️ the People Pleaser who finally started to please themselves 😏

🪜 the corporate climber who finally stopped climbing enough to ENJOY where they are at

All of that FELT like an impossible dream when they walked into my office. And yet…they walked out not only believing the dream was possible, but with the skills and tools they needed to continue making the impossible possible.

They learned to tend to their Brains 🧠 and Minds ❤️ like a gardener.

What would you like to grow in your mind garden?

❤️ Love
