Anger is often misunderstood, vilified, or misused, shaped by households where it was either wielded abusively or forbidden entirely. Yet, anger is a powerful and vital emotion when used consciously. It’s not the enemy it’s an ally, a spark that can ignite boundaries, clarity, and passion when harnessed with intention.
For years, I felt anger on behalf of others when they were teased, excluded, or discriminated against but when I was violated, I bypassed anger, sinking straight into hurt, sadness, or pain. Through Breathwork, I finally tapped into my own anger, allowing it to surface in waves (in other words, through many sessions…LOL!) This practice taught me to wield anger as a tool for setting boundaries, declaring my worth, and standing firm in pivotal moments. While I could advocate fiercely for others, I had to learn to do the same for myself. This is the power of "AND" honoring both the empathy I feel for others and the strength I claim for myself.
Unexpressed anger can wreak havoc, either exploding outward in ways that belittle, separate, or dominate, or imploding inward, fostering passive-aggressive behaviors like dismissive remarks masked with a smile or withholding connection. When we over-identify with our position, anger becomes a weapon to feel validated or in control. Suppressed, it turns inward, manifesting as inflammation, anxiety, depression, or agitation in the body and mind.
Instead, imagine anger as your honorable sentry a guardian that signals when a boundary has been crossed. By stating clearly, “This is not acceptable you have crossed the line,” you reclaim your space and power. Few of us have role models for healthy anger, but we can learn to wield it consciously, transforming it into a force for passion and creativity. On the other side of anger is passion and purpose!
