The recent passing of a 13-year-old student has left many feeling shocked and heartbroken. In moments like this, we ask: how can we protect our students better?

The truth is — teachers, parents, students — anyone can become a key support figure.

【悼念逝者,守護生者🪷Remember the departed and care for the living 】

今天是大埔火災的「頭七」,是中國傳統中家屬接受死亡,讓生者安頓並紀念逝者的時刻。

面對災難的過程並非線性。當解決了實際問題,難受的情緒可能才會浮現,如有太多難以承受的思緒壓力,或會出現自殺念頭。這些時候請留意有否下列情況:
- 持續且強烈的情緒
- 退縮或自我隔離
- 絕望感
- 難以維持日常作息、睡眠或飲食
- 與親朋同事道別,或贈予重要物品
- 頻繁使用藥物或酒精

如果你認識的人出現這些跡象,你可以:
- 關心與傾聽,不急著給出建議
- 在對方願意時,陪伴尋找適當的支援

從災難中復原是一段漫長的旅程,你的陪伴可能就是他們最需要的支持。

Today marks the seventh day since the fire tragedy in Hong Kong—a time in Chinese tradition to mourn the deceased and support the bereaved.

Surviving a crisis isn’t a linear process. Difficult feelings can surface after practical concerns have been addressed. Thoughts of su***de may arise when overwhelm sets in. It is therefore important to look out for signs of distress:

- Persistent and intense emotions
- Withdrawal or self-isolation
- Hopelessness
- Disruption to daily routines, sleep, or appetite
- Saying goodbye or giving away cherished items
- Increased use of drugs or alcohol

If you notice these signs, you can help by:
- Checking in and listening without trying to fix or give unsolicited advice
- Being present and offering to explore support when they’re ready

Healing takes time, and your presence can be the support they need most.
