If you’ve ever left a convo thinking “wait… why do I feel worse?”

There’s a huge difference between someone helping you feel grounded, capable, and supported vs. someone using “support” as a way to control you, critique you, or make you question yourself.

If you’re a therapist (or any helper), it can feel almost wrong to take up space in healthcare like you should be able to handle it, push through it, or be “low maintenance.”

You don’t have to minimize your needs to be worthy of care.

Your intention was never this impact.

The impact was something else entirely. Restricting. Bingeing. Drinking. Using. Extreme spending. Rage outbursts. Ghosting everyone you love. Picking a fight. Shutting down. Saying the thing you can’t take back.

These behaviours? It was a part of you doing a job.

In Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, we think of the mind as having different parts. And some parts work overtime to make sure you never feel a pain again. They numb, control, restrict, binge, lash out, escape, or burn it all down before the hurt can land.

The intention? Always protective.
Their impact? Usually the opposite of what you actually wanted.

So you end up apologizing for behaviour you didn’t even feel in control of. Promising yourself you’ll do better. And then doing it again the next time something tender gets touched.

Is anyone’s mind as jumbled as mine?

Being a single mom can feel like you’re the scheduler, the comforter, the chef, the cleaner, the planner… and also the one who’s supposed to stay calm through it all.

Trying to be a present mom, run a life, remember the meds, keep the appointments straight, and still have energy left… it’s a lot.
