A Plan For Senior Care’s Guide To Transportation Options

Studies show that when adults no longer have a means of transportation, it can affect their quality of life. To help with the lack of socialization, feeling dependent, depression or diminishing health use our guide to learn about options to help your loved one get around town.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION – Many public transportation organizations offer options to seniors and individuals with disabilities. Programs can include demonstrations on how to ride, route options and discounts. Contact your local public transportation systems for schedules and other options in your area.
• Buses – contact your local public bus system
• Light rail or train – www.amtrak.com/seniors-travel-by-train

PARA-TRANSIT – Private companies offer transportation for those who are wheelchair bound or are unable to utilize public transportation. For a fee, they offer door to door service. You can locate companies online, from your local senior center, doctors’ offices or your local hospital.

VOLUNTEER & LOCAL PROGRAMS – Most cities have transportation options for seniors. Check with your local senior center and hospitals to learn about programs offered. Area Agencies on Aging is also a great resource – www.n4a.org/transportation

TRANSPORTATION COMPANIES
• Uber Assist is designed to provide additional assistance to seniors and people with disabilities. Drivers are specifically trained to help riders into vehicles and can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, and scooters- www.uber.com
• Lyft offers elderly assistance upon request- www.lyft.com
• California Yellow Cab - www.californiayellowcab.com

MEDICAL INSURANCE – Check with your loved one’s medical insurance company to see if they cover nonemergency transportation to doctor visits. Some plans cover taxi services.

ITEMS TO CONSIDER WHEN HIRING TRANSPORTATION
• What does the service offer, schedules, service areas, rates, available discounts
• Does one need to qualify for service
• Will the services come to the door for pick up or does the senior need to be at the curb
• Is there an additional cost for an es**rt
• Can the transportation accommodate one in a wheelchair or who is disabled

If your loved one is struggling at home to care for her/himself and you would like to explore senior care and housing options, please give us a call today. We will be happy to create a personalized care plan for your loved one.

A Plan For Senior Care’s Guide To Elder Abuse

As your loved one's age, it is important to watch out for their well-being and protect them from abuse. Sadly, elder abuse happens to millions of seniors in America every year. Elder abuse is when another person mistreats, causes harm, loss or distress to a senior.

Abuse can happen in any setting. A senior can be abused be in their home, a relative's home, or in a care facility. Abusers can be a caregiver, stranger, family member, loved one or anyone the senior trusts.

There are many different types of elder abuse. The most commonly reported cases are physical abuse, neglect, abandonment, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and financial abuse. Use this link from the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse to learn about the different
TYPES OF ABUSE- http://www.preventelderabuse.org/elderabuse/

Knowing the signs of elder abuse is important to help protect and prevent harm to your loved one. Often abuse is not recognized right away or easily. It can be overlooked if the senior has memory impairment or cannot communicate easily. Use this link from the National Center For Elder Abuse to learn about the
SIGNS OF ABUSE- https://ncea.acl.gov/faq/index.html

If you suspect abuse or neglect, it is important that you help the senior. Intervene immediately, whether it be removing the senior from the unsafe environment, firing the caregiver, asking family and friends for help or calling authorities to report the abuse.

Call 911 immediately if the senior is in a life-threatening situation.

Report abuse to family, doctors, friends, police or authorities. Below are agencies that have specially trained staff to assist you and investigate the abuse.

A Plan For Senior Care’s Guide To Grooming and Hygiene

Caring for your senior loved one can be a challenging task. Whether it be preparing meals, es**rting to a doctor’s appointment or taking care of finances, one of the most important aspects of care is personal grooming and hygiene. Use our helpful tips to make your seniors personal care easier.

BATHING:
• Staying calm when bath time arises is imperative. When you are calm, it is contagious! Allowing your senior to relax while bathing, makes it easier for everyone
• Increase the room temperature to warm the air. Cooler air can be startling to a senior
• Be prepared with all items such as liquid soap, shampoo, washcloth, towel and clean clothes before you get started
• Test the water temperature to ensure it is not too hot or cold. Using a handheld shower head is helpful for rinsing. It can be helpful to start at the feet and work your way up
• For the safety of your senior loved one, ensure that an anti-slip mat or stickers are on the shower/tub floor. Using a stool or bench can be more comforting
• If bathing your senior becomes too difficult of a task, consider hiring a home care agency for assistance. They have trained professionals on staff specifically for this care

HAIR CARE:
• Use gentle hair products such as baby shampoo or a dry shampoo and leave in conditioner, one to two times per week.

DENTAL:
• Schedule regular dental check-ups. If needed use a house call dentist or hygienist
• Dentures should be checked on a regular basis for proper fit
• If the ability to use a regular toothbrush diminishes, consider switching to an electric device

HAND AND FOOT CARE:
• Regular manicures and pedicures are relaxing and helpful for hygiene
• Schedule regular visits to a podiatrist for foot care. The doctor can also cut the toenails.

EAR CARE:
• Visit an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist to ensure clean ears and wax removal if necessary

Keep smiling to keep a positive environment. Do not have expectations that all grooming can be done all at one time or to perfection. Every bit of grooming makes a difference to help your senior feel better!

If your loved one is struggling at home to care for her/himself and you would like to explore senior care and housing options, please give us a call today. A Plan For Senior Care will be happy to create a personalized care plan for your loved one.
