Paya Serai Hilton Petaling Jaya is legendary for Buka Puasa. This year Hilton Petaling Jaya looks set to repeat the crowd-pulling feat with Citarasa Nusantara ke Timur Tengah — a thoughtfully curated buffet filled with comforting Malaysian favourites and Turkish specialities.

From rendang, ketupat, lemang and kambing guling to kebabs, shawarma, baklava and Turkish coffee, every corner of the buffet is familiar yet exciting. End on a sweet note with traditional kuih or fresh durians on wheels from 8.30pm.

Braised beef noodles is a firm favourite in GZ. Every shop has its own version, from the ‘ching’ (clear) soupy type to more pronounced braised broth. Customers can choose preferred ingredients: tripe, two types of intestines, tendon, brisket or beef balls with or without noodles (several varieties available e.g. coarse rice noodles, flat rice noodles, lou shi fun, lai fun or instant noodles type). Some beancurd puffs are added for textural interest and one stall offers ox blood cake too.

We also enjoyed luscious sweet potato and glutinous rice ice cream from Ah Ma Handmade Dessert. Our last hurrah before we leave on Sat was a good cheong fun stuffed with sliced pork, prawns and lettuce, served with a nicely seasoned soy sauce.

Too irresistible…the roast pigeon is so delicious we returned to sample the honey roasted version. Even though it’s 3pm the crowd keeps coming although waiting time is shorter - 30 minutes compared to 1-3 hours at peak times.
Today’s claypot rice with pigeon and truffle hits the spot as did the steamed okra with minced garlic.

Best experience of Day 4 in Shawan Ancient Town➡️the making of Jiangzhinai 姜汁撞奶 🫚fresh ginger (local 小黄姜) juice combines with hot milk to create a soft, smooth custard-like pudding. The lady said the fresh buffalo milk can’t be too hot and has to be “pulled” slightly before it is poured over the ginger juice. Balance of taste is important and she even insisted we scoop the cream on top towards us when eating. No stirring or else the pudding would disintegrate hence wasting her painstaking efforts.
