From LSU SPH to California State University–Long Beach! Today on Peek into the program, we're featuring Dr. Erica Rosen, a 2022 graduate of our Epidemiology & Population Health program. She went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health and the Alcohol Research Group. Her work explores how alcohol use impacts people living with HIV, with a focus on liver injury and health disparities. Today, she uses social and spatial epidemiology to uncover the socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic factors shaping alcohol-related outcomes.

This September, our “Peek into the Program” series is spotlighting Epidemiology & Population Health—showcasing how our students and faculty are driving data-driven prevention, real-world solutions, and healthier communities.

First up, meet Rachel Denny, PhD student! She partners with neighborhoods across New Orleans to empower residents, fight environmental injustice, and advocate for worker rights. Rachel also works to connect unhoused communities with vital resources—and she previously led the rodent division at the City’s Mosquito, Termite & Rodent Control Board.

Her research is all about real-world impact: improving urban health and driving change where it matters most.

This Friday, August 29, marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina. At the LSU School of Public Health, we recognize that this anniversary is a difficult time for many New Orleanians. As we remember the lives changed and the resilience of our community, we are hosting a series of events this week for staff students and faculty to reflect on the public health lessons learned. Mental health resource materials will be available at every event, because we know healing is ongoing.

UPDATE: Our Baton Rouge expansion is getting even bigger!

While the opening of the LSU School of Public Health’s Off-Campus Instructional Site (OCIS) in Baton Rouge has been delayed until Fall 2026, the wait comes with good news:

We won’t just be opening one program—we’ll be opening two!

Students will now have the opportunity to pursue the MPH in Epidemiology & Population Health and the MPH in Community Health Sciences & Policy when the OCIS launches next fall.

This expansion means more opportunities for students interested in continuing their education on the LSU Baton Rouge campus while joining LSU’s mission to build a healthier Louisiana. 💜💛

For the last of this week's "Peek" into the Biostatistics program here at LSU School of Public Health we wanted to show off a bit the research being done! Dr. Anand Paul is leading exciting work in data science with his recent research into new methods to improve how we detect patterns and make predictions. His advancements, including the Enhanced Bayesian Gaussian Hidden Markov Mixture Clustering Model and a hybrid Bi-LSTM and RBM model for underwater object detection, demonstrate significant improvements in clustering performance, computational efficiency, and accuracy.

As part of our Peek into the Program series, we’d be remiss if we didn't highlight the Biostatistics & Data Science's commitment to social responsibility and community engagement. This past March, our faculty and students presented research and volunteered at the ENAR 2025 conference in New Orleans—demonstrating our dedication to collaboration and meaningful contributions to the scientific community.
