The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) hosted a sod-turning ceremony on August 8, 2025, to mark the beginning of construction for the new Industry Polyclinic. This event represents a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to improve access to more healthcare services for residents of the Industry and Cummings Lodge communities.
The event was attended by government officials, healthcare leaders, and community representatives, all celebrating a project that will significantly strengthen healthcare delivery in the community. The project duration is 12 months from the commencement date on 21st July 2025 and will cost $708,624,090.
GPHC assumed management of the Industry Health Centre in May 2011. At that time, the facility served about 100 patients per month. Today, the centre accommodates 2,164 patients every Month, said Mr Robbie Rambarran, Chief Executive Officer of GPHC. He added that the new facility will have advanced medical equipment that will add new services such as x-ray, ultrasound, ECG, asthma bay, physiotherapy, dietary and nutrition, diabetic care including retinopathy and a dental suite.
Mr Rambarran also announced the addition of a new lungs centre that will include services such as a polysomnography lab, a comprehensive test used to diagnose sleep disorders, the first of its kind in Guyana. Furthermore, the facility will offer a full pulmonary function test, also known as a lung function test. This service will also create opportunities for detailed studies of pulmonary fibrosis and other lung diseases.
The Industry Health Centre was originally established in 1997 to serve residents who previously had to travel to Bel Air or walk to Plaisance to access healthcare.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony highlighted that the project was launched in response to the area's increasing population. He emphasized that the government of Guyana is committed to ensuring that the needs of the people are being served.
The Industry Polyclinic, once completed by July 21, 2026, will also be integrated into the National Electronic Health Records system, eCARE, joining its sister polyclinics and GPHC in going digital.
