Fertility Europe We are an association of European organisations and associations involved with infertility issues. Founded in 2009. The purpose of Fertility Europe is:
1.

to build a strong cross border network among European patients and professionals in order to achieve the exchange of best practise;
2. to promote education in the field of protection of reproductive health and a pro-active approach to family planning;
3. to improve the rights of those affected by difficulties in conceiving in areas such as, inter alia,:
a) access to high quality infertility investigation, treatment, support and guidance,
b) reduction of multiple births,
c) full information on all assisted conception/reproduction treatment possibilities and the right to accept or to reject treatment without any discrimination,
d) cross border reproductive care.
4. to encourage and assist further research in its broadest sense into fertility/infertility and its various effects;
5. to persuade European officials to take responsibility for guaranteeing the right to access to quality fertility treatments and for educating teenagers/adults about how to protect their fertility and prevent infertility. Fertility Europe also aims at:
1. promoting discussion and information on the following aspects of fertility: equity of access to treatment, involvement of those treated, community awareness, EU health policy, psycho-social, ethical and cultural aspects, involuntary childlessness, rights/welfare of children conceived through ART, European information platform/point or reference, public discussion, evolving ART techniques/proven results, legislation and professional guidelines;
2. communicating the views of patients, as stakeholders in the European healthcare debate, by means of a broad, truly representative and independent patient group resource;
3. providing patients’ organisations with a forum so as to encourage the exchange of best practices among the national patients‘ organizations in order to enable a harmonious increase in their level of reputation, accountability, effectiveness and professional competence;
4. enhancing and supporting cooperation and exchange of experience between patients’ organizations and professionals;
5. co-operating in the formation and execution of joint projects aimed at improving awareness on fertility issues and the situation concerning the rights of those affected by difficulties in conceiving.

We are pleased to share that our Chair, Maciej Śmiechowski, will be speaking at the upcoming event “Together for Tomorrow: Addressing Europe’s Fertility Challenge”, hosted in the European Parliament by MEP Romana Jerković on 4 December 2025.

As Europe faces declining fertility rates and growing inequalities in access to timely care, it is essential that the voice of patients is present in every conversation that concerns them. This multi-stakeholder dialogue will bring together policymakers, DG HERA, experts and civil societies to explore how future EU initiatives can close gaps in fertility care, support family-friendly policies, and strengthen gender equality.

We warmly encourage all interested to join this important discussion shaping Europe’s demographic and health future while supporting people in their reproductive autonomy.

Infertility affects 1 in 6 people worldwide, yet far too many still lack access to quality fertility care. To help close this gap, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Human Reproduction Programme (HRP) have released the first-ever WHO guideline dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infertility.

Proud to share that Klaudija Kordic, past Chair of Fertility Europe, was part of the group of experts working and contributing to shaping these important recommendations.

Join the official launch event to hear from leading reproductive health experts, researchers, clinicians and Klaudija herself, as a patient representative, as they present the new guideline and discuss its impact on policy, practice and the lives of those affected by infertility.

The Fertility Europe Executive Committee convened in Brussels for a productive couple of days of brainstorming, planning, and collaboration. It is always a rare and precious opportunity to work together in person and strengthen our shared vision, and we cherish it enormously.

We also had the chance to meet with the ESHRE Chairs to update them on our ongoing work, plans and aspirations.

A massive thank you to everyone who dedicated their time and effort to fruitful conversations about Fertility Europe's future.

🌍 Day of Tolerance

Today, as we celebrate the Day of Tolerance, it’s important to remember that intolerance doesn’t always show up loudly. Sometimes it hides in assumptions, judgments, and the way society treats people facing struggles we may not fully understand.

One example is the harsh, often judgmental attitude toward people experiencing infertility or those who are involuntarily childless. This is a deeply personal condition, yet many face stigma, unsolicited opinions, or accusations about their worth, lifestyle, or choices.

And while treatments exist, they are not available to everyone, limited by cost, geography, policies, or lack of support.

On this Day of Tolerance, let’s remind ourselves:

🤝 We are all human.
❤️ We all deserve empathy, understanding, and respect.
🌱 And every person’s path, parent or not, by choice or by circumstance, is valid.

Let’s choose compassion over judgment. Today and every day.

Patients’ Recommendations: Fertility in Education & Public Information

Because reproductive health is not a luxury - it’s a right.
Too many people across Europe are navigating fertility-related decisions without the information they need. Whether they’re teens just learning about their bodies, adults trying to conceive, or loved ones trying to be supportive, the gap in education and public information is harming real lives.
Insights from the FActs! game, patient stories, and our mapping of public information systems across Europe show a clear message: education matters, and the system has significant gaps.
That’s why patients are calling for urgent change.

1. Start Early with Fertility Included in Comprehensive Sexuality Education
Schools must go beyond “how not to get pregnant.” Fertility education should include how fertility works, how it changes over time, and realistic pregnancy chances, giving young people the knowledge to make informed choices.

2. Make Public Information Evidence-Based, Timely and Easy to Find
Authorities must ensure information is visible, trustworthy, regularly updated, and understandable to everyone, not hidden behind jargon or lost online.

3. Support Adults to Recognise When to Seek Help
Public campaigns must clearly explain when and how to see a specialist. Timing matters - early access to accurate information and care can shape lifelong outcomes.

4.Involve Families, Friends & Partners in the Conversation
Involuntary childlessness affects entire families and beyond, yet few resources exist to guide those supporting loved ones. Public messaging must help relatives and friends understand what to say, what not to say, and how to offer real, respectful support.

5. Provide Continuous, Life-Stage Specific Information
Reproductive health and fertility is not one moment in time, it’s a life course issue. People need different information at different life stages, from puberty to menopause. Public education must reflect that, supporting diverse paths, decisions, and outcomes across all ages.

💔 Learning the news of infertility can come as a shock, you may feel lost and lonely. But remember: there are people you can talk to, seek advice from, and find support with.
Sonia learned the hard way that not giving herself enough time and space only brought unwanted results. Her story reminds us that information is only valuable when it is accurate. Because informed choices start with the right facts.
