Magdarie van Staden Yoga E-RYT 500 | Yoga, pranayama, philosophy, meditation + mindfulness in Westville + Upper Highway, KZN

Just Breathe Yoga Shala is a tranquil yoga studio located in Waterfall, Durban. Here at the shala we are dedicated to create and hold a space for you to journey, explore and awaken to your true self, hidden beneath the fluctuating thoughts and emotions through the practice and discipline of yoga. Our classes are structured to take students through a well-balanced practice, rooted in traditional, authentic teachings. Students are taught on mantra, pranayama (breathing exercises), philosophy, asana (postures) and meditation. Our teachers are trained in styles of satyananda, hatha, vinyasa, yin and restorative yoga. As dedicated students to this beautiful life-science, lifestyle that yoga is, they teach from a space of their own continuing learning and exploration through practice, study and meditation.

Let yourself be moved by all the goodness that surrounds you…

Our brain is naturally wired towards a negativity bias - which means, we are wired to see the negative things, to focus more on what’s wrong than what’s right.

It serves our survival - to be able to spot potential threats.
Our ancestors didn’t need to remember every sunset — they needed to remember which berries made them sick, where the snake was, or who betrayed their trust.

But, we are not dying all the time….
When we understand this is just how the mind works, we can begin to gently rewire it — to also see what is working, what is beautiful, what is true.

PS. Later in July I’ll be hosting a live webinar exploring the landscape of the mind through a yogic lens, how our brain’s negativity bias shapes your perception, habits, and decisions, why you keep falling into the same loops — and how to gently interrupt them and give you a simple map for responding rather than reacting. Sounds interesting?

Here’s the details:
Where is my mind? Webinar
Wed, 23 Jul 5pm - 6.30pm - you’ll have access to the recording for a week after the session.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak on mindfulness at Wellness Day.

I always return to this: yoga is so much more than movement. It’s a profound system for understanding the self.

We explored the layers of the mind as outlined in yogic philosophy—and how becoming aware of our mental patterns can create space for change. Through movement and breathwork, we shift our state. We regulate the nervous system.

And in doing so, we begin to choose our responses rather than be ruled by reactivity. When we shift our state, we change our story.

As Viktor Frankl reminds us:
“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

PS: I’ll be offering an online talk soon on this topic for those wanting to explore the layers of the mind and nervous system regulation through the lens of yoga. Keep an eye out.

SPACIOUSNESS: A Yoga Retreat with Magdarie Van Staden
A retreat to practice resting in the space between…

15 - 17 August, at Pumula Retreat Centre - South Coast, KZN

This is not a retreat with promises or goals. It’s not about fixing, changing, or becoming anything other than exactly who you are in this moment.

It’s an invitation to pause.

To take a step back and feel what it’s like to simply be—
without the weight of expectation or the rush of the outside world.

In the stillness of nature, you’ll find room to breathe.
In the quiet of the ever present now, you’ll discover what it feels like to let go of doing, just for a little while.

No agendas, no pressure.
Just time to unplug,
to reconnect with the space inside you and around you.

Here, we don’t ask you to do anything more than what feels right.

Just slow and soft.
Simple moments of presence.
And the freedom to be exactly where you are—
no more, no less.

Come without a need to change.
Come with the invitation to rest in the spaciousness of now.

5:30 AM • Sunrise Yoga at Manifest every Wednesday and Friday
There’s a quiet magic to this class - the way it grows, the way we meet in the soft dark before the dawn.

This morning, an extra layer of grace: guiding three incredible powerhouse teachers through practice. From left to right—Christine (Krishnaa Mukti), my teacher visiting from the UK, Niree (), and Marrion ()

To move with them through practice felt like a silent conversation. No words needed.

(And in case you wondered - I also still get a bit nervous having a yoga teacher in my class 😝)

Grateful for this practice, and for all of you who are part of it.

Returning, with a heart both full and light.
This week, I had the deep joy of sitting in practice at the Buddhist Retreat Centre under the guidance of my dear teacher, Christine Withiel (Krishnaa Mukti). To be led in practice by her again was like hearing an old, familiar melody - one that settles deep into the bones.

In February 2020, I began my 300-hour advanced yoga teacher training with Christine at Jivananda Yoga Studio - we started first in person, then online when the world turned inward over lockdown.

After our training, Christine and Howard left for the UK. Even after our formal studies ended, and being worlds apart, our core group of teachers continued to gather monthly, held by Christine’s wisdom and the unbroken thread of sangha.

And now after years, here we were, practicing together again - no longer through screens, but in shared presence, as though no time had passed at all.

Christine walks the path of yoga as effortlessly as breath. There is no separation between her teaching and her being. I am honoured and humbled to have been one of the many students and teachers who has passed through the doors of Jivananda Yoga Studio, and to now continue this legacy as I lead my very own 200-hour yoga teacher training soon.

As Chrissi van Loon reflected at the start of our retreat: This was indeed a homecoming, a family reunion. A family reunion, stitched together by shared reverence and the simple joy of returning.

Heartfelt thanks to for your warm welcome and care. Your delicious, lovingly prepared meals nourished us deeply and made the retreat even more special.

Bliss is - waking up to a slow morning with tea and books 🥰
I’m enjoying a quiet weekend home alone and using this time to re-read The Bhagavad Gita by Eknath Easwaran.

I enjoy this version, because it gives you a nice overview of this Indian epic in a story format, before you go into depth unpacking each verse as is the case in some other translations.

📚 This is also one of the prescribed textbooks for our upcoming 200hr Yoga Teacher Training.

I was asked how many copies of BG I have…swipe to see….
Just a few 😅 For something more in-depth, I love the two-volume version by Paramahansa Yogananda. Really going into the symbology and meaning of each verse.

If you are new to the Bhagavad Gita, it is quite simply a guidebook on our daily battle within, our struggle for self-mastery. Really a familiar conversation we all know - an internal dialogue we each face daily with ourselves, in the very depths of our consciousness.

Curious to learn more?
My upcoming Yoga Teacher Training will go into much more detail on the philosophy that shapes the very practice of yoga. Reach out if you’d like to find out more about this course.

Safe to say the sound bowls made the 1 558km journey to Stilbaai in one piece 😅 It was so incredibly special hosting three soulful sound Bath sessions at the ‘s beautiful studio last week.

The highlight of it all was sharing a sound bath session with my mom, who has never before attended a class with me 🥰

That also wraps up the last of my events for the year. Now me and the bowls have another 2 000km trip ahead before we get back to Durbs.

PS. All classes with me will start again from 13 Jan. And dates for sound bath sessions in Glenwood (26 Jan) and Gillits (23 Feb) is already open for bookings. You can book on Bookamat, see link in bio.
