Do you use offal??

Or as the American's call them, variety meats?

They are cheap (only because they are unpopular).
Rich in protein and iron.
Very quickly cooked. (easy to overcook).
And tasty!

I have a lovely recipe for kidneys in red wine.
Happy to share.

Haggis for us tonight.
I have a Scottish husband and this is one tradition we have kept to all our married life.
Haggis, neeps, tatties and a wee drop of whisky on Burns Night.
Cheers!

Food shopping this weekend??

How do you get 30 DIFFERENT plant foods into your diet each week?

Nuts , seeds and berries on your morning yoghurt. (natural not low fat of course!).
Salad with lunch adding different leaves, veg sticks etc. with sandwich. (wholemeal bread of course!).
Or soups - (homemade of course!)
Snack on seasonal fruit. Oranges, English apples and pears are particularly good at the moment.
Main meal - throw in a different grain such as rice, quinoa, buckwheat, pearl barley for a tasty change.
Add lentils (so many types) to a curry, lasagna, stew.
Add fresh herbs.
Roast not just potatoes but parsnips, turnips, squash, beetroot - all good at the moment.

And of course plan; plan; plan.
Local markets can be a great source; Aldi is not bad for reasonably priced veg and herbs and Grape Tree for your nuts and seeds.

Job done!
Happy Gut. :)

Newsprint, TV and social media have been FULL of healthy eating advice this month.
Some interesting debate about the weight loss jabs.

My thoughts are they have a place; particularly with the seriously obese who's overweight is causing very serious health complications.

They are not, in my opinion, for the more normal - I need to lose a kilo or two.

Why? Because they DO NOT teach healthier habits going forward.
Muscle mass is also lost and when the jabs are stopped, the weight will pour back on.

We need to look at our health habits.
Food choices, sleep, exercise, fresh air and hydration.
Get those right first; then look at how to lose weight.

It may not need intervention at all.
It WILL be slower but it will also be cheaper and sustainable and teachable to younger family members.
Just a thought!

Have you had your aloe?
As many of you know, this is my go to morning health drink.

Why drink Forever Living Aloe?
I have found over the years it has improved my digestion, kept my immune system running well and given me more energy.
With 75 nutrients it is a damn fine health cocktail!
The Japanese call it Ishi Izaru.
Roughly translated 'No need For a Doctor'.

Want to give it a try and see what benefits you get?

Soups!
I am in love with my new pressure cooker!
It helps me cook some of the most wonderful soups.
Using pulse veg such as green split peas alongside leeks, onions, celery, celeriac etc.
Ooooh delicious.
Cheap, easy, tasty, can be frozen and all helping towards our 30 different plant foods a week.

So many health tips at this time of year.
Some good articles in this week's weekend papers.
Nothing new but a good reminder to choose foods wisely.
I would always recommend thoughtful shopping (message me if you want some personal tips for your family/work circumstances).
AND choosing seasonal foods.
At this time of year the root vegetables, really come into their own.
Carrots, parsnips, swede, turnip (oh and yes after 45 years of marriage, Matt and I STILL disagree on what we call neeps...)
There are also wonderful cabbages.
Have you tried hispi cabbage, cut into quarters and gently sautéed with chili and touch of olive oil?
Absolutely delicious and a great accompaniment to many a meat or vegetarian meal.

I'm back!
Time to re-invigorate our health and well-being page.
Common sense with a good smattering of aloe. (of course!).
In these cold days some key tips for looking after yourself.
Firstly, do not forget hydration!
Drinking cold water may not appeal.
Try warm water; I start every morning and have done for years with a mug of hot water and slice of lemon.
There are wonderful array of herbal teas that are refreshing and sugar free.
I love the pukka ones with ginger and turmeric.
Warming and hydrating.
Aloe blossom tea is gorgeous too.
Pop a bag in a pot as it will make three cups!!
All spicy and delicious at this time of year.

I was chatting about Sun Protection Factor yesterday.
There seemed to be some confusion.
SPF 30 means that if you burn without protection in 10 mins - SPF30 will give you 30 x 10 = 300 minutes of protection.
Which is 5 hours of protection.
Now I do not know about you but after an hour or so, I am ready for a bar, lunch, swim etc.
I know very few people (farmers, gardeners??) who will be in full sun for 5 hours without a break.
This one is water resistant and safe for ocean life.
I apply once each day when on holiday and it does me well.
So if you have a late holiday booked, pick up one or two; add in an aloe gelly for safety and you are all set!

Why take aloe?

*Well it tastes good - especially the mango!
*Has 75 nutrients.
*It can count as one of your 10 a day!
*As a pre-biotic, it is great for supporting gut health (and thereby our immune system)
*It makes me feel more energised!

Make it your daily habit.
Simply message me and try 4 bottles over the next two months and see if you notice a difference.

Full refund it you do not!

IBS - irritable bowel syndrome.
When asked, this was one of the issues that was raised as being of wide concern.

Our digestive tract is far more complicated than one big long tube. As research develops, we are beginning to have a much broader and deeper understanding of how individual and complex this body system is.

It is not simply food in and waste out!

Our immune system, mental well-being, brain health, skin condition, absorption of nutrients and emotional health are all bound up in one way or another with our digestion.

My go to book for all things digestion, is 'Improve your digestion' by Patrick Holford.
Tim Spector too has some great advice on digestive issues.

What I would advise is, don't put up with a digestive system that is below par.
Keep a diary that includes, mood, stress, foods eaten, digestive condition and monitor your own health.
Not with fear but with a curious mind.
Then see if you can work out a connection between your health and your lifestyle choices.
From mouth ulcers to diverticulitis - there very well could be a simple solution.

Happy to chat and undertake a food diary review for you.

Sorry to break the news but after the age of 25 our collagen production begins to diminish!
We need this vital protein for our bone matrix, tendons and muscles.
It is not just about having a pretty face!!
Looking after you on the inside is MORE important.
Happy to chat with you about inner health and collagen too.
I take mine last thing at night and with a history of breakings wrists, I am confident I am doing my post menopause bit (alongside weights, calcium, exercise etc. etc. ) to keep my bones strong.
