I get asked all the time if, as a naturopath, I am “anti-doctors,” “anti-medicine” etc.

The answer to that question is no - I am not against medicine or doctors. Conventional medicine has led to incredible discoveries and life-saving practices.

I am however an advocate for *true* informed consent, which should mean:

👌 You have been given adequate information to make an informed decision - this includes their recommended treatment AND other treatment options that are available

👌 You have given consent without any undue pressure, coercion or manipulation

👌 Both the benefits AND risks of proposed treatments are fully explained and transparent

👌 You are given the respect of asking questions and choosing what you would like to do without shaming or coercion

I meet so many people who have been prescribed the oral contraceptive pill, antidepressants, sedatives, reflux medications, unnecessary antibiotics..without any of this kind of information being offered

At the end of the day, it is up to you to ask, do your research and listen to your intuition as the medical system is not geared towards individualised, patient-centred care that allows time and investigations outside of their paradigm. Risks unfortunately tend to be downplayed, or worse, even mentioned

ASK:

What are you suggesting? Why? How does it work in the body? Are there side effects? What can I do with dietary, lifestyle and natural medicine?

The answer to this question should be “plenty” - any physician who says ‘nothing’ is ignorant or simply misinformed. So many medications result in worse long-term outcomes, and there are so many non-invasive natural medicine interventions with a very low-risk profile

Hopefully in the future, we reach a stage where doctors will explain that yes there are many other options available, but it’s not my area of specialty so you should consult with a practitoner in this field.

Until then - always ask questions, get multiple opinions, learn about all of your options, and always remember that you have a choice. Any sign of coercion, shaming or manipulation (e.g. guilt tripping, fear-mongering) is an instant red flag for me 🔴 (by a doctor, or a naturopath)

For anyone who struggles to stay hydrated on busy days, I can confirm a useful strategy can be to buy a big glass jar cup from Kmart and a stainless steel straw. Makes drinking water, juice and iced teas/coffee a lot more appealing 🤓

Have you ever found yourself becoming the monster you’re fighting?

When we point a finger, judge, or condemn another group or person about anything (their behaviour, or views),it’s highly likely that we are invariably exhibiting that which we are judging (projecting)

We project onto others the parts of our selves that we don’t want to look at. A projection of the “bad” other, while we hold onto and demonstrate our “goodness” or virtuosness (virtue signalling)

I see this very often in the world of activism, including the “natural versus conventional medicine” dichotomy, where we can get caught out using the very same fear-mongering, black & white, polarising tactics of the paradigmn that we condemn.

Look at the v@x1ne debate-there are a wide spectrum of views and opinions, but on either end are two extremes who are both projecting the “bad” onto eachother, desperately trying to prove they’re “right,” and are both equally as afraid and despising of eachother. Without any nuance or context

If we find ourselves becoming enraged or upset at a particular issue (outrage culture) and are spending all of our energy focusing on this, we may be using it as an opportunity to project our unresolved pain onto something so that we don’t have to look at it within ourselves

It’s personally an ongoing practise of mine to stay informed of the truth of world events, but simultaneously not get sucked down the rabbit hole of over-focusing on how corrupt things are (especially in the world of medicine and healthcare).

If I find myself in this place, it’s a reminder to get back to my self-care rituals and focus on what I really want to experience (joy, purpose and connection).

A favourite quote of mine that I use as an ongoing practise and reminder to myself is

“Activism that is not foregrounded by self-care, is a distraction”

The more we prioritise our self-care and self-enquiry, and make the effort to proactively create joy in our lives and address our own inner trauma dimensions, the more curious and compassionate we become, we can enter into groups, movements and ideas from a place of authenticity and balance rather than projecting unresolved pain

Point No. 12 - Soul Remembrance 🙏🏼✨

What I’ve come to learn is that the process of Hatha Yoga is all about this - remembering the soul.

Yoga philosophy provides an empowering framework to navigate life and take responsibility for your reality.

A regular practice is a gentle, consistent reminder of our true nature.

How are you reminding yourself?

‼️ Your symptoms aren’t mistakes - they’re messages.

Inflammation, hormone shifts, digestive issues, fatigue…these aren’t random or broken processes. They’re purposeful adaptations to how your nervous system perceives your environment.

When your body senses danger - whether it’s real or remembered, physical or emotional - it responds. It redirects energy, raises cortisol, disrupts sleep, slows digestion.

Not to harm you, but to protect you.

Healing begins when we stop asking “How do I fix this?”...and start asking “What is my body responding to?” 🗣️

Ever react to a food one day and not the next? It’s not just the food - it’s your nervous system.

Stress = vagus nerve dysregulation.

⬆️ Perceived “intolerances”

The food didn’t change.Your stress state did.
