Progesterone impacts a woman’s mind and brain in so many ways:

🌸Female mating behaviors,
🌸Increasing GABA activity (calming the body..... )
🌸Improving pain relief
🌸Reducing anxiety
🌸Increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)- nerve protection and new nerve growth.
🌸Improving serotonin (calming the mind)

Understanding your own progesterone fluctuations can help manage symptoms and support a sense of balance.

What phase are you? Do you notice the shifts?

Reintroduction on My Birthday!

I’m so thankful to celebrate my birthday with you! Thanks for following along. My biggest desire with this account is to create community with my clients and support women in knowing and understanding their bodies.

I wanted to share some things about myself you might not know on my birthday.

1. I lived in Finland for one year. I ate reindeer and traveled to the Arctic Circle. I started running in Finland, and that was the year I found my faith.

2. During my herbal studies program, my dear friend and I traveled to Kenya with a team of naturopathic doctors to serve in rural health clinics and study native herbs.

3. I met my best friend and partner in Hawaii on the Big Island. He’s taught me so much.

4. While living in Indiana, I spent three years lobbying for licensure in naturopathic medicine. I was fired up about people having access to preventive care that focuses on health creation rather than disease management. (My roaring thirties, lol)

5. I’m originally from Washington state.

6. Becoming a mom changed everything for me. I was always career-focused and wanted to work in a hospital with cancer patients. After giving birth, my eyes were opened to the importance of women’s health. Being a mom is my top job now, and second, dear to my heart, is women’s health and hormones. When women are supported and thrive, they have the ability to impact networks, communities, families, and generations!

Hormone Balance and The Nervous System

It's commonly believed that menstrual hormones can become the villains in our stories. They are out of balance, and need to be adjusted and "fixed" to alleviate the pains of our stories. In some ways, this might be true, and yet, they also reflect and mirror back to us symptoms for our benefit. They respond to the messages and signals they receive from us, from our thoughts, our attitudes, and the tone of our nervous system.

Here are four simple ways to support your nervous system and mindset, and in turn, positively influence your hormonal balance:

Hormone Balance: Four Practices to Support Your Nervous System

Start with gratitude. Your body is always working for your benefit. What can you appreciate in contentment?

Notice the stillness of nature. It allows one to adjust the mental pace and soften the nervous system.

Fear nothing. Safety allows your nervous system to move into a place where the body can rest and restore.

Set your table to dine. Savor your food. When we set our tables and eat as an act of care for ourselves and our loved ones, true nourishment can occur.

What practices do you have to support your sense of balance?

What would you add to this list?

🌸Short Chain Fatty Acids and Reproductive Health

Short-chain fatty acids influence reproductive health in many ways.

✨SCFAs help balance inflammation, which can disrupt ovulation and hormone balance.
✨SCFAs support estrogen balance and prevent estrogen dominance
✨SCFAs stabilize insulin to support balanced androgens and ovulation.
✨SCFAs prevent immune overreactions linked to infertility and miscarriage.

🌿The most effective way to support SCFA production is to eat a diet rich in prebiotic dietary fiber and fermented foods, such as:

💚Asparagus
💚Garlic
💚Onion
💚Jerusalem artichokes
💚Dandelion greens
💚Burdock root
Eating these foods can help nourish beneficial gut bacteria, supporting digestive and reproductive health.

In many of the Blue Zones, physical activity is seamlessly woven into daily life, whether it’s walking to tend animals, fetching water, or gathering supplies. In contrast, modern living, with the blessings of all its conveniences, often requires a conscious effort to stay active and limit prolonged screen time.

But humans are not built to be sedentary. Many chronic conditions, including reduced fertility, are closely linked to decreased physical fitness and unfavorable body composition.

✨To make a meaningful impact on fertility, a consistent movement practice must be considered an essential part of any holistic treatment plan. Movement isn’t optional; it’s foundational to optimizing fertility and hormonal health.

Could adding Metformin Improve Your Fertility?

Sometimes using medications can seem scary. Will they come with side effects or cause more problems later? Will I have to be on them forever?

Metformin is a medication that can help enhance your health and increase the impact of the changes you're making, improving weight loss and regulating ovulation. It has a fascinating history, being isolated from the plant goat's rue, and has some intriguing properties that may actually help extend your life and improve your microbiome.

Optimizing your chances of getting pregnant requires a personalized strategy and consistency.

If you have weight or fertility concerns, you have options. As a naturopathic physician specializing in women’s hormonal health, I’ve worked with hundreds of women to help them lose weight and get pregnant using natural methods.

Friendly Gut Bacteria

They help us out. They’re an essential aspect of our health and even our reproductive success.

With modern environmental insults, toxins, and lifestyle factors disrupting our good bacteria friends, we can take an active approach to supporting this aspect of our health.

Where can we find friendly bacteria?

1. Local food—Soil organisms are great for gut health, and local foods may still have active living microbes.

2. Soil—When was the last time you got your hands in the dirt? It is a great way to support your biome!

3. Healthy friends- You know what they say about who you spend your time with, it is true!

4. Fermented foods- teaming with life!

5. Being in nature- the air and plants outside are a rich resource of healthy microbiomes.

6. Contact with your furry friends- Pets can increase the levels of beneficial bacteria like Akkermansia.

Dr. Guan helps women who want to get pregnant naturally, balance their hormones, and create a life where they can thrive.

During my four years of intensive medical education at Bastyr University in Seattle, WA, I was awarded the prestigious Sheila Quinn Founder's Award for service to the Bastyr community. Excellent services to my clients and community at large is something I continue to hold in the highest esteem. I am committed to providing the best care to all those whom I have the honor of serving.

I completed preceptorships with leading doctors at Seattle Children's Hospital and the Cancer Treatment Centers for America. I saw breast and prostate cancer patients on an NIH grant at the Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Center. Working with children and cancer patients instilled in me a deep commitment to prevention and understanding of what relentless hope means. I shifted my focus to women's and children's health and health aging/prevention because I knew if we started "healthy" from the beginning with healthy aging, mothers, babies, and families there is a whole lot of good that can happen for generations to come.
