CSTA Presents:
Getting Away From Neurology: Understanding the Body-Mind Through Biosemiotics
A CPD workshop with Andrew Cook
4 July 2026

We are delighted to open bookings for our third CPD workshop this year, 'Getting Away From Neurology: Understanding the Body-Mind Through Biosemiotics' with Andrew Cook.

A health-oriented view of embodiment

The core of CST is an appreciation of health as an innate and continuously present force. However, most trauma-oriented material (and “trauma-aware” practice) is based on the idea of trauma-as-pathology.

A re-frame of dissociation and overwhelm as normal healthy adaptive states (for which the body has evolved a normal path to reverse) creates a very different model of “trauma” that is more in line with CST, taking the focus from neurology and more towards pre-vertebrate evolutionary stages of life and from there to biosemiotics – the science of communication in living organisms and ecosystems.

What you will learn

A re-framed version of trauma in terms of healthy biological responses and shifts in embodiment, along with a well-tested framework to use this – either hands on and/or with the patient participating.

The workshop will cover theory; self-experiential exploration; a map of the phenomenology and biology of dissociation; and some very practical tools and ideas that can be applied to working successfully with dissociation, general loss of embodiment, and imprints with dissociative patterns in a CST / bodywork practice. The course also include practical hands-on work but – for reasons that will become apparent – this will not be table-based.

Andrew Cook has been practising CST for 30 years in Norfolk and has spent the past 20 years adapting trauma psychotherapy into a bodywork practice.

Thank you to Helena Swahn and the team for another wonderful edition of The Fulcrum. I've been reading - From Fragmentation to Wholeness: Re-igniting the Spark in Recovery after Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, by Erica McKeen & Dr Priuanka Prahdan. This article chimes with Nora Brennan's article on mTBI - Ripples on a Pond, published in Fulcrum edition number 81. Huge appreciation to all.

This week, the very wonderful Dawn of Dawn Goodes Therapies stepped down as a Trustee. On behalf of us all, I'd like to say a huge thank you for the generosity of spirit and time that Dawn has shared over the years, regardless of challenges.
Luckily, she's not going far! Dawn will now be heading up CSTA Standards & Ethics, taking over from the equally wonderful Adam Lee. Much appreciation also goes to Adam, for his dedicated and commnitted work over the years.

I love biodynamic craniosacral therapy; the art of using touch to support health.

There is wonderful evidence to support what happens in biodynamic cranial session.

When you touch people they change. It is that simple.

There is good science on the power of mindfulness and presence, touch feeding our sense of self, and on how education about pain and the nervous system works as a tool to relieve pain.

We know that being in relationship with other people and the wild and natural world supports health.

Many people struggle with safety; it can be hard work negotiating being in the body. Coming into relationship with a skilled therapist can ease the pain.

The essence of my work uses presence, education, movement, and touch to help people reconnect with health. I use embodied presence supported via non-doing touch.

Keeping it simple is my constant goal. I try to be as present as I can whilst using a light touch. As the relationship deepens I can be a witness to the patterns held in my client’s gently pulsing body. Something happens, always.

The latest Body College training started in March 2026. It is still possible to join the course at Seminar 2. We can help you catch up on the teaching material and skills to train as biodynamic craniosacral therapist (BCST) with the current cohort.

The course is suitable for existing health professionals considering adding a new modality to their work as well as individuals wanting to start a career in an exciting and evolving therapy.
