Children don’t always have the words to explain what’s happening to them.
So they show it instead.
Through behaviour changes.
Withdrawal.
Anger.
Sleep issues.

What looks like “difficult behaviour” is often something else entirely.
Something worth paying attention to.
Awareness isn’t about fear, it’s about noticing, understanding, and creating spaces where children feel safe enough to be seen.

Some minds don’t switch off easily.
Not because you’re doing something wrong, but because your brain processes more, faster, and often more intensely than others around you.
What gets labelled as overthinking, distraction, or being “too much” is often a nervous system that’s overloaded, not broken.
And when that overload builds, it doesn’t just stay in your thoughts.
It shows up as anxiety, exhaustion, irritability, and that constant sense of being on edge.
The answer isn’t to push harder or try to force focus.
It’s to understand how your brain works, and what it actually needs.
Because when you work with your mind, rather than against it, things begin to feel different.

Experiences of sexual assault don’t stay in the past.
They can show up in ways that are hard to name, in anxiety, in relationships, in how safe you feel in your own body.
And often, people carry this quietly. For years.
You don’t have to minimise it.
You don’t have to explain it away.
And you don’t have to carry it on your own.
Support exists.
And it can make a difference.

Last month, we touched on something many women quietly experience but rarely talk about properly.
The emotional impact of your cycle.
Perimenopause.
Menopause.
Now we’ve unpacked it fully.
Because what’s often dismissed as “just hormones” is anything but.
Hormonal shifts don’t just affect your body.
They influence your mood, anxiety, sleep, and how resilient you feel day to day.
For some, it shows up as subtle changes.
For others, it can feel like becoming someone you don’t quite recognise.
And one of the hardest parts?
Not having the language to understand what’s happening.
This blog is about changing that.
Giving you clarity. Context. And a sense that you’re not alone in it.

Stress isn’t just something you “think” your way into.
It lives in the body.
In your sleep.
In your nervous system.
It shows up as irritability, exhaustion, brain fog, or that constant sense of being on edge.
And over time, it changes how you cope, how you respond, and how you feel about yourself.
This month is about understanding stress properly, not minimising it.
Because when you understand it, you can start to work with it — not against yourself.

We’re used to separating mental health from physical health.
But your mind and body are not separate systems.
Chronic stress affects your immune system.
Anxiety affects your sleep.
Low mood affects your energy, focus, and even pain levels.
Looking after your mental health isn’t optional.
It’s foundational.
And it deserves the same level of care, attention, and support as anything physical.

Perimenopause and menopause are often spoken about physically, but the emotional impact can be just as significant.
Many women experience changes in mood, anxiety, sleep and emotional regulation during this stage of life.
Understanding these shifts can make them far less confusing and far less isolating.

🌿 In April we’ll be sharing a blog exploring the emotional journey women experience from the menstrual cycle through to post-menopause.

If you’re parenting an ADHD adolescent and feeling exhausted, you’re not failing.
Regulation is learned.
And it takes time.

We work with adolescents and families navigating emotional flooding and relational repair.

Sometimes the things we struggle to say
find their way into poetry.
A few words.
A pause.
A feeling that finally has somewhere to land.

For many people navigating anxiety, ADHD, depression or emotional overwhelm, poetry can become a quiet form of containment. It gives shape to emotions that are otherwise difficult to explain.

You don’t have to be a poet to experience it.
Reading a line that resonates.
Writing a few thoughts in a notebook.
Letting language hold what feels heavy.

On World Poetry Day, we’re reminded that words can heal in small, powerful ways.
What line of poetry has stayed with you?

Happiness is not constant calm.
For many people with ADHD, anxiety or depression, happiness comes in moments — not permanence.
And that is still valid.
Happiness might look like:
• A regulated afternoon
• A repaired argument
• A quiet mind for 10 minutes
• Feeling understood

Mental health is not about forced positivity.
It’s about building capacity.

Neurodiversity is not a trend.
It is a recognition.
Brains differ.
Processing differs.
Regulation differs.
When we stop asking “What’s wrong with you?”
and start asking “What does your nervous system need?”
everything shifts.

This week we celebrate difference, and support.

Mother’s Day is often filled with love, appreciation and celebration.
But it can also be a moment to pause and acknowledge the quiet emotional work that mothers do every day.
Holding the family together.

Listening.
Supporting.
Encouraging.
Regulating the emotional temperature of the home.

For many mothers, especially those raising neurodivergent children, navigating their own challenges, or simply trying to balance everything life brings, that role carries both joy and weight.
Today is a gentle reminder that mothers deserve care too.
Taking time for yourself, asking for support, or simply allowing yourself to rest is not selfish, it’s part of staying well.
To all the mothers, caregivers and women who nurture others every day, we see you.

Happy Mother’s Day from Storms Edge Therapy 🌿
