Today, we recognise Deafblindness Day – a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and rights of those living with combined vision and hearing impairments.

Deafblindness is a disability that impacts a person’s communication, mobility, and access to information – but it does not define who they are. With the right support, inclusive systems, and accessibility tools, people who are deafblind can thrive, contribute meaningfully to society, and live full lives.

We also honour the legacy of Helen Keller, one of the world’s most remarkable advocates for the deafblind community. Despite becoming deaf and blind at just 19 months old, Helen broke barriers to become a writer, public speaker, and global symbol of courage. Her life reminds us that disability is not inability.

Let’s continue to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and support the development of services for persons who are deafblind across Guyana and beyond.
