It ain’t easy bein’ wheezy! Are you and your child ready to for Spring and the allergens it brings? Asthma season is here! 🌸 🌺 🍃 🌬 🤧

Did you know around one in five children will be diagnosed with asthma sometime during childhood?

Spring has finally sprung but that also means it’s peak time for pollen and grasses to trigger asthma. Asthma is a common condition in children, caused by narrowing of the small air passages in the lungs.

It's an important time to seek a medical review with your child's GP or specialist to ensure your child has the most effective medication to maintain good asthma and hay fever control. This will reduce the risks of being affected by springtime thunderstorm events.

Some very practical tips on reducing the risk of food allergies in children!

Recommendations are to focus on introducing the common food allergens, including peanut and egg, in the first year of life to reduce the risk of developing food allergy. This includes (and is particularly important for) those at increased risk of developing food allergy such as children with eczema.

When your baby is ready, at around 6 months, but not before 4 months, start to introduce a variety of solid foods, starting with iron rich foods, while continuing breastmilk or infant formula.

It is important parents and caregivers know how to identify and respond to allergic reactions.

Remember when you were a kid and your parent(s) came to the school or kinder to help? Remember that excited feeling?

Well, guess what?! 🤫 Erin found out that parents have that exact same feeling when they come to help! She had so much fun with the kinder children, teaching them some sprain first aid, and what to do in an emergency using DRsABCD. Erin’s helper here is her youngest, Master E.😍

A heartbreaking story of a little life lost due to the unknown.

Twenty seconds. Twenty seconds and a few centimetres of water is all it takes for a child to drown.

But Fiori Giovanni, who was raised in a house without a bath in the north-east African country of Eritrea, has never heard of this terrifying statistic, and didn’t know children have drowned in baths, Eskies, fishponds, buckets and even pet bowls.

“I opened the door to let Ben in, and I opened a sliding door of the most torturous kind.”

Police notified child protection services, who say Giovanni could only see her son, Odis, under supervision, even though Odis’ father, Bellinger, tells them she is a great mum.

Later she is charged with child homicide. Charges were eventually dropped.

We had a full house at The Centre for U this morning for our session.

Expectant and new parents invested their time to learn how to act if they have an emergency with their little person.

Lots of positive feedback from an engaged group of learners who will, hopefully, never have to use their newly acquired knowledge.
