No matter what's going on, being there in it with your child is what means most to them.

Not that you had the answers.

Not that you had it tidy.

Not that you had it all done.

It's that you were there, and real, with all the mess and frustration, but with an open heart.

I don't always get it right. I don't always use the tools that I know. I lose my cool sometimes, or shut down.

But when I do use the tools I know, something beautiful happens. A togetherness takes place, instead of a divide. Every single time.

But the tools I love and practice aren't rooted in control, force, or shame. They are rooted in curiosity, empathy, and teamwork.

You can know these tools and still get angry or overwhelmed. These feelings are just indicators that something is off. It's what you do about anger, overwhelm, and frustration, the majority of the time, that matters to your kid.

Overwhelmed by anger and don't know what else to do but shout or shut down? My Anchoring and Repair Through the Nervous System course trains your nervous system to feel security during stressful parenting moments so that you can show up with calm.

Intu It is 10 YEARS old today!

For 10 years, I've worn all the hats, from creator to accountant to marketer, and everything in between.

Through all the lessons in business, all the expertise and wisdom I've accumulated, and all the growth I've experienced as a person, I continue to have so much fun bringing joy, simplicity, structure, and a childlike essence back into the home for so many families. I get to be myself in this work, and that is priceless to me.

For this milestone, I thought it would be fun and most helpful to share 10 of the most impactful things I have taught parents over the years that have most profoundly helped parents shift how they show up so that their kiddos feel more connected to them.

1️⃣ We all want the same basic things, parents and kids alike, like connection, acknowledgment, validation, to be seen, and to be heard.

2️⃣ We can only tolerate emotions from our kids to the extent that we tolerate them in ourselves. If you want to grow your tolerance, slowly begin to feel your feelings.

3️⃣ Kids are like icebergs... we only see the behavior on the surface, but what's underneath the behavior is a boulder full of needs, frustrations, desires, fears, and disappointments. Target that instead.

4️⃣ Show up. Be right there with them and demonstrate attunement with your body language, even if you say nothing. It feels like you aren't doing enough, or anything, but it's everything.

5️⃣ Understanding is the # 1 thing kids want from their parents. Listening without teaching, an unconditional acceptance. Which is not the same thing as condoning their behavior.

6️⃣ What would it be like if you made connection the most important thing in your every interaction with your child? More than compliance and obedience. How would you show up?

7️⃣ Your kids are 100% dependent on you for their regulation. Not 50% or 99%. Hence the importance of # 2.

8️⃣ Identify 3-5 core family values that you want to work together as a family to uphold, and place them in a central part of your home to refer to daily.

9️⃣ Eye-level eye contact. Period.

🔟 Curiosity is your greatest superpower.

Cheers to many more years of continuing to serve you!

Kids need connection to reduce behavior problems. I know because I was that kid…

I had no tools to effectively communicate my feelings and needs.

So I was labeled as defiant, difficult, & disagreeable.

All I wanted was for someone to see me, understand me, and make sense of it with me.

But I often instead was met with shouting, threats, and punishment… the opposite of what I needed most.

It's no one's fault, our caregivers just didn't have the tools to provide this.

They didn't know the way back to calm because they were dysregulated themselves.

They didn't know how to access a sense of security from the inside because it doesn't feel safe.

They didn't have a roadmap to guide them through their own emotions when their child was upset... nobody had the tools to show them the way.

It is my honor to do this work with parents every single day.

To guide their nervous system down a heart-centered path to safety and security.

So that they can do this for their kids in the most challenging moments.

Do you find yourself saying "hurry up" or "move faster" to your child a lot?

Rushing a child is one of the most toxic, energy-draining, dysregulating things we can do for them.

To this day, it is the number one thing that depletes me.

We learn to be out of rhythm with our bodies and conform to the pace of the outside world.

And this leads to irritability, whining, defiance, tantrums, and conflict.

"But how will they be prepared for the real world?"

I'll tell you.

It's not by throwing them into the fray to figure it out (hello adult anxiety and overstimulation that we numb out with alcohol and mindless scrolling).

It's by having a practice of consistently regulating their nervous system back to security after activation.

Find ways to support your children's natural pace.

Rise earlier, allow for down time with nothing planned, give opportunities for daydreaming, doodling, and losing track of time, do more sensory activities like playdough and bubbles.

Then, when stress hits, they're going to have the precise skillset they need to be able to move through it.

Do you show up calmly for your child at first, but then after a few minutes you start to lose patience?

And by the end of it you feel super drained or like you've been hit by a truck?

It's because you are most likely giving from a place of hurry, fear, attachment, expectation, or resistance.

Causing restriction, lack, and limitation.

You know the feeling in your body... tight, clenched, not breathing.

And you end up feeling like a failure because you couldn't remain calm with your child.

But that is just all wrong.

Because all you're doing is enduring triggers, creating less access to your parasympathetic nervous system and regulation.

And it is not your fault for reacting this way.

You're just in a stress response loop that you learned in order to quickly get through perceived danger.

Instead, give from a place of safety and self-connection.

What would that feel like in your body?...

Warm, soft, expansive?

Because your kid's tantrums, feelings, struggles, and emotions are not dangerous.

Here, you create more space, time, presence, and access to your own regulation, where your triggers don't really feel like triggers anymore.

And you have the capacity to show up more fully and lovingly with your child.
