If the values of confidentiality and consent are compromised for some, they can be compromised for all. Therefore, the American Psychoanalytic Association opposes any attempts at breaching patient confidentiality and unnecessarily intruding into the clinician-patient relationship.

APsA Supports Patient Confidentiality & The Privacy of The Clinician-Patient Relationship The US Justice Department's recent efforts to subpoena records of those providing gender affirming care is not just an issue for gender medicine, but a broad-sweeping issue for all mental health treatment.

An essential aspect of ethical and effective treatment is confidentiality, which the Federal Government itself has recognized through HIPAA since 1996. One of the primary objectives of HIPAA has been to reduce fraud and the misuse of personal health information by outside actors

The patients are the "why" behind psychoanalytic research. 👥

Mental health deserves the same urgency and quality of care as other ailments and psychoanalysts depend on vetted, published research to guide professionals towards the most effective treatments. Our podcast guest, Dr. Barbara Milrod explained the driving force behind much of the tireless research that is ongoing in the US and abroad.

It’s slow business, this demonstrating efficacy. On the other hand, it’s sort of all we have.

If you think of a problem with mental health as being the equivalent of “Oh my goodness, someone has post-traumatic stress disorder!” I think the physical equivalent is sort of like a cancer. Right?

Something like that is really serious and affects your life. Heaven forbid you have something like that you are gonna rush to the clinical literature to look at randomized controlled trials to see what works and we owe this to our patients and to ourselves as clinicians."
-Barbara Milord, Guest of "Psychoanalysis & You" Podcast

🧐The more questions we ask in psychoanalytic research, the more that we find answers and even better questions. Each study pulls back another layer of the mind and reveal yet another mystery.

The unconscious doesn't hand out instruction manuals.
It leaves breadcrumbs that lead to more breadcrumbs and that's where the magic happens. When we stop hunting for neat conclusions and start embracing the mess of human complexity, we discover that the questions themselves are doing the heavy lifting.

❓What example of research in psychoanalysis opened a box of beautiful new questions for you?

"The question is what do we as psychoanalysts or as a psychoanalytic psychotherapists have to potentially contribute to the the mental health crisis?"
Barbara Milrod answers podcast host, Gail Saltz, regarding the value of peer reviews in psychoanalytic research.

"I was in psychoanalytic training and that is my therapeutic orientation. On the other hand, I did not wanna be delivering ineffective, useless therapy to people in need. There is a public mental health crisis, as people know and you read about it in the papers.

The question is what do we as psychoanalysts or as a psychoanalytic psychotherapists have to potentially contribute to the the mental health crisis? So, back to your comment about peer review. We love peer review. Now there's better and worse peer reviews, but most certainly we want our outcome research to be of the highest scientific quality. Meaning that what we're studying is has to be able to be reliably reproducible - this is why we write psychotherapy treatment manuals - and transportable."
