Piriformis muscle syndrome (PMS) is a neuromuscular disorder commonly thought to be responsible for deep buttock pain and tenderness, which can radiate from the sacrum to the posterior aspect of the thigh.

In 2019, a study have been conducted in which group of patients complaining from local pain, tenderness around ischial tuberosity, pain aggravated on sitting, and pain on any maneuver that increases piriformis muscle tensionconfirmed to have piriformis muscle syndrome after examination by experienced physiotherapist

Those patients receive some advices to lie on their sides with a pillow between their knees. They were also advised to avoid sitting on hard surfaces, sitting crossed-legged, walking, or running for long periods of time in addition to having ultrasound guided dry needling for piriformis muscle

Dry needling sessions three over 1 week. (With48-hour intervals in between) found to decrease pain intensity after 72 hours after treatment sessions and this effect remained after 1 week follow up.
